<p><strong>Comment:</strong> Vanilla creme, fruits (like a fruit tart with curd), almonds, green grapes and a hint of pepper in the nose. It tastes fruity and spicy, the sherry only leaves traces but adds complexity. The guests on our stand at fairs really liked it.</p>

<p><strong>Comment:</strong> What a great allrounder with a salty soul, and spirit driven: I am getting sea spray (ozon), fudge, caramel, serrano ham, darker and brighter fruits (plums, cherries, pineapples, starfruit) and much more. On the palate this noble Islay dram reveals loads of distillery character in perfet balance. Pure Bunna at a great age.</p>

<p><strong>Comment:</strong> Spices (chili and leather), canned milk, bananas, plums &#8211; it unites different aromas in a great way. The briny taste renders late iodine and peat discretely &#8211; perfect balance and elegance! Recommendation.</p>

<p><strong>Comment:</strong> A wonderfully maritime dram, there is leather, moss, discrete peat and smoke, apricots and almonds. What an island spicebomb with roasty aromatics, too &#8211; a perfect pair for game.</p>

First Editions 2000 refill hogshead 58,7%</strong></span></p>
<p><strong>Comment:</strong> This is another piece of evidence that Bowmore keeps on changing without losing its basic ferny character: the ones from the mid-nineties were rather peaty drams, but since 1999/2000 the ccassis and fruit pronunciation are back in stronger fashion (less peat though). I predict these vintages too taste like the mid 1960-legends one day. Try for yourself: complex, cassis-fruity and soft Islay-characteristics. Bowmore is such a single single malt. Daddy like (sorry <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/1f609.png" alt="😉" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> )!</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Andrew Laing&#8217;s new bottlings have sat on my shelf for a while, now let&#8217;s taste them. I went through the releaes twice. Overall, the quality is good and some<span id="more-6273"></span> are highly recommendable. Check out these rather short notes:</p>

<p><strong><span style="color: #ff0000;">Littlemill 24 y.o. The First Editions 1988, 55,8%</span></strong></p>
<p><strong>Comment:</strong> Another good one from Littlemill, these are very consistent. As usual, we have the herbs (thyme, rosemary), grass, dried flowers, lemon and vanilla in the front seat. Then we get peaches, bergamotte, apple and quince. A typical Littlemill with a spicy edge.</p>
<p><strong>Score: 89</strong></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="color: #ff0000;"><strong>Strathmill 21 y.o. The First Editions 1991, 57,3%</strong></span></p>
<p><strong>Comment:</strong> A highland-like Speysider. Spicy oak, hazel wood, licorice, bitter elements, yellow apple, macadamia nuts, pistachio, honey and pepper.</p>
<p><strong>Score: 85</strong></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="color: #ff0000;"><strong>Allt A&#8217;Bhainne 18 y.o. The First Editions 1994, 54,5%</strong></span></p>
<p><strong>Comment:</strong> Ginger, lemon, aromatic smoke, quite some oak and vanilla, quince and peach liqueur.</p>
<p><strong>Score: 87</strong></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong><span style="color: #ff0000;">Teaninich 24 y.o. The First Editions 1993, Sherry Cask, 58,1%</span></strong></p>
<p><strong>Comment:</strong> This is your typical well-matured whisky with some spice elements that bring freshness. The sherry cask rendered raisiny and sweet aromas that are well integrated. I am also getting apple pits. Well balanced overall.</p>
<p><strong>Score: 87+</strong></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="color: #ff0000;"><strong>Longmorn 27 y.o. The First Editions 1985, 51%</strong></span></p>
<p><strong>Comment:</strong> This one is my favourite of this series. Bright and cristalline fruitiness like a Riesling Auslese, lime blossom, cassis, apricots, you name it. Reminiscenses of old Glenglassaugh or Tomatin whiskies come to mind. Just fab.</p>
<p><strong>Score: 91</strong></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="color: #ff0000;"><strong>Blair Athol 20 y.o. The First Editions 1993, Sherry Cask, 57,8%</strong></span></p>
<p><strong>Comment:</strong> A very unusual dram, I must say. Italian bitter (Aperol), chocolate, dark wood and spice, green elements (kitchen herbs), sherry and what not. It gains quality on the palate.</p>
<p><strong>Score: 89</strong></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="color: #ff0000;"><strong>Miltonduff 30 y.o. The First Editions 1982, 48,3%</strong></span></p>
<p><strong>Comment:</strong> Fruit basket meets pickle glass water (mustard seed, pickles, dill and herbs), soft smoke, leather, honey, vanilla and a medium dose of oak infusion.</p>
<p><strong>Score: 89</strong></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="color: #ff0000;"><strong>Mortlach 24 y.o. The First Editions 1989, 57,9%</strong></span></p>
<p><strong>Comment:</strong> Burnt steak, black pepper, porridge, acidity, sulphur, white balsamico, kitchen smoke &#8211; a unique dram that delivers on the palate.</p>
<p><strong>Score: 88</strong></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="color: #ff0000;"><strong>Highland Park 17 y.o. The First Editions 1995, 53,9%</strong></span></p>
<p><strong>Comment:</strong> A peaty one but still gentle and immensely complex and coastal, I love it. It shows its allrounder qualities.</p>
<p><strong>Score: 90</strong></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="color: #ff0000;"><strong>Jura 18 y.o. The First Editions 1995, 52,8%</strong></span></p>
<p><strong>Comment:</strong> Nicely farmyardy, coffee, canned milk and leather, The sweeter elemensts are doughnuts, Nutella, vanilla cream, gingerbread and pistachio. It might not be overly complex but tastes just right und quite unique too, as a Single Malt should.</p>
<p><strong>Score: 90</strong></p>

Today I am tasting seven recent bottlings.<span id="more-5948"></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #ff0000;"><strong>Littlemill 21 y.o. The First Editions 1991, 47,7%<br />
</strong></span></p>
<p>This<a href="https://www.slowdrink.de/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/The-First-Editions-logo.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignright size-full wp-image-2824" alt="The First Editions logo" src="https://www.slowdrink.de/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/The-First-Editions-logo.jpg" width="130" height="90" /></a> is a great Lowland malt right from the start, mostly on vanilla, American oak (with quite some Bourbon traces) and thyme. I also find other mediterranean herbs, soft smoke, green tea, nettles bark, big marshmallow sweetness (almost like a liqueur in moments), lemon zest, caramel and almonds (Amaretto, especially on the palate). It is powerful in the mouth and less woody than the nose would suggest. Water helps this but adds bitter notes. <strong>88 points</strong>.</p>

</strong></span></p>
<p>Don&#8217;t rush this one. It is a very green (herbal) and lemony altogether. I am getting a sharp grassiness on loads of alcohol, some nettles, blue cheese (indeed also the aromas of a fondue with cheese and beef), vanilla and lemon, lemon balm, verbena, orange zest and caramellized orange skins, grapefruit, cardamom and soft smoke. Water releases more orange power and improves the sharpness. <strong>86+ points</strong>.</p>

</strong></span></p>

<p>My title on this one would be &#8218;Apricot Heaven&#8216;. Miltonduff always offers interesting drams that can deliver, and this one is no exception. It starts off very fruity (infusion, tea-like in general) and intense (great concentration). The big aroma is apricot (liqueur, fruit, canned fruit, schnapps, etc.) accompanied by peaches lemon zest, white pepper and vanilla. No water is necessary (but can broaden the mouthfeel) and the sweet Miltonduff maltiness coats the tongue along with wonderful fruit oiliness. Maybe not overly complex but simply nice. <strong>89 points</strong>.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="color: #ff0000;"><strong>Caperdonich 20 y.o. The First Editions 1992, 55,5%<br />
</strong></span></p>
<p>This one didn&#8217;t fully convince me but still is a nice but shy dram. It is rather malty with honey, heather, aromatic smoke, cider, white chocolate, ginger and some zestiness (lemon and orange). On the palate it is too hot for my taste (ginger and spices going wild in the ethanol), so I add water: a rounding off-effect takes place but no gain in complexity. <strong>82 points</strong>.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="color: #ff0000;"><strong>Glen Elgin 26 y.o. The First Editions 1985, 46,6%<br />
</strong></span></p>
<p>Nicely concentrated on bergamotte and Asian spices (nutmeg, ginger bread, white pepper). In the second row we find pears, yellow apples, figs and pistachio. The palate shows huge complexity and fruit oils in perfect balance (no water!). I love it but it is hard to pin down the aromas here, maybe spinach and all the aromas above with fruits of all kind &#8230; well, let&#8217;s say loveable and unique, tightly knit. <strong>90 points</strong>.</p>

Well, never judge a book by its cover &#8230; . This Bunnie is austere and very complex at the same time, revealing amazing maritime aromas (salt, fresh sea air, ozone-laden sea spray, mossy peat whiffs, etc.). The complexity goes on with jamon on melon, polished leather, black pepper, Roquefort cheese, lemon drops and the notes from the wine (red grapes, raisins, etc.) which really fit here. To me it noses like an old elegant Islay dram from a time gone by, and the palate matches this experience. Soft peat and spice round off the excellent show. Kudos! <strong>91- points</strong>.</p>

</strong></span></p>
<p>This cheesy Clynelish is a funky one with unusually big notes of caramel, (blue) cheese, milk coffee and leather along the typical profile with candelwax, green apples and Atlantic depression moving in. I can&#8217;t fully decide if I like this mix in the nose. However, it turns way more classic Clynelish on the palate (plus a little cheese again). This dram screams for a piece of Cheddar. Nice spices in the finish. 										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>At the Finest Spirits Fair in Munich 2012, I found a new independent bottler I hadn&#8217;t come across yet: The First Editions. It is imported to Germany by the very nice Sondheims, and the friendly Scottish partner Andrew Laing (Stewart Laing&#8217;s son &#8211; from the famous Douglas Laing brand &#8211; Andrew is the head of this project) was there as well, who let me try an excellent Tomintoul from 1967 (to be reviewed soon). Today, I am going to review Andrew&#8217;s recent Highland Park:<span id="more-2819"></span></p>

In the second row there are glazed doughnuts and candy floss, dusty bookshelves, leather, white pepper, ginger and peat bog notes. The fruity elements (aside from the oranges) consist of canned peaches, red currant and apple crumble. Complex, I&#8217;d say. This &#8218;HP sauce&#8216; tastes dry and malty on the mid-palate at first, then warming spices and dried fruits (mainly apples) lead into a very well-rounded finish with a mix of the aromas mentioned above. However, it is less impressive than its nose suggested &#8211; give this some time. A really good daily dram for allround purposes.</p>
