After a while, I am back for tasting sessions because my health really improved and my „system“ is tuned again. So let’s start out with the new Maltman bottlings, which could convince recently. I hope you enjoy these reviews and find them useful:

Glenrothes 18 y.o. The Maltman, Bourbon Cask, 50,8%

Grilled marshmallow and a lot of Bourbon cask influence right away (white oak, vanilla, fudge) with heather, honeycomb, pineapple, melon, apricot ice cream, pistachio and just a hint of smoke in the nose. The oakiness with bitter elements dominates the taste and is a bit closed at first. Water really opens up this dram and unlocks the complexity and aromas of the nose. Medium length finish on this classic mature Bourbon cask Speysider. 86 points.

Mortlach 22 y.o. The Maltman, Bourbon Cask, 46%

The first reminiscence one gets is thick smoke when a good steak is turned on the grill. This meaty and smoky base is accompanied by Italian herbs (mainly rosemary, sage and thyme, but also bay leaf), peaches, dried fruits, sandal wood, earth, milk, caramel and vanilla. Barrel-fermented Chardonnay might work as a wine comparison. Wow, this tastes as good as it noses, really well-balanced with all aromas dancing on a small pin of a needle. The smoke delivers such a perfect counterpart to the other aromas. A more-ish dram with a long finish. High class. 90 points.

Isle of Arran 16 y.o. The Maltman, Oloroso Sherry Cask, 46%

Dark cake with loads of different cherries, which come from the Oloroso cask. Maraschino, Amarena ice sauce from Italy, morello jam, you name it. A nice spiciness (salt, pepper, curry, Asian aromas), darker bread dough, raisins, summer flowers, and more without anything dominating (aside from the cherries in the first row). It tastes spicy and full of life with tingles. One of my favourite Arrans from a great sherry cask that doesn’t change distillery character too much. Kudos! 89 points.

Cask Sample: Ledaig 7 y.o. The Maltman (Bourbon Cask)

For years now, I have been introducing Ledaig to my friends as a wonderful dram with peaty qualities that doesn’t need to hide from any South Coast Islay whisky. My collection of 1972s can show the capacityin taste, and the 2005 is such a great distillate as well. That’s why we chose to bottle a Ledaig 2005 as our club bottling (soon tho be released, only a matter of weeks). This one, still a cask sample from the same time, makes no difference. Already great, but needs to mature for three more years or so. Love it already (89-91 points)!

P.S.: Between sample sets, there was a Springbank 17 y.o. (dark vatting) which I strongly recommend (90+ points) if you can find it (there are still some around). As it tastes a lot like the old sherried stuff (green thistle release, etc.), it is a real bargain for around 115.- Euro at cask strength.

What a cool label and what an enticing colour this new Agency bottling has! I was very curious to try this 23 y.o. sherried Bowmore a week ago. Since then it received very different scores – which I like (polarizing drams). In general, the 1989 Bowmore whiskies were less peaty and direct than the versions distilled after 1992, some of them were a bit perfumy still. Let’s review it, here are my 2p:

Bowmore 23 y.o. The Whisky Agency ‚Fights‘ 1989 – 2012, ex-sherry butt, 341 btl., 53,1%

Whisky Agency's new series 'Fights'

Comment: This one is quite sherried, a raisiny and slightly sulphury sweetness is primary here which overrides the more subtle 1989 Bowmore character too much for my personal taste – a bit like prune jam on toasted bread with a little peat. I am also getting roots, maraschino cherries, lilacs, pepper, hazelnuts, chocolate, leather and earth. The palate is very similar to the nose and not among the best balanced or complex drams out there, it reminds me of a cough drop. The finish, however, is nice on sherry, elegant dark wood and peat. In a nutshell: Some might like this but I find it a bit weird and not very Bowmore. Again, just a personal opinion.

Score: 77

Long time no hear … we had a lot of tastings and media events going on, and then a virus hit the whole family and my nose. Well, what can you do …? Now I am back at the tasting table and eager to try some Bunnies from different bottlers, all from ex-sherry casks. Recently Bunnahabhain could convince more and more people. Let’s see if these three bottlings are in line with the rise of this underrated Islay dram.

Bunnahabhain 43 y.o. The Whisky Agency ‚Sea Life‘ 1968 – 2012, refill sherry butt, 498 btl., 47,0%

Comment: <img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-4750" title="Bunnahabhain 43 y.o. It posesses a hugely fruity nose (this tropical and sour fruitiness I adore – passion fruit, melon, guava, grapefruit, kiwi, etc.) with maritime elements in the background and quite a combo of caramel and vanilla. A cookie-like and rather discrete oakiness is kept at bay by the ever-present fruits and whiffs of coconuts, almonds, late-harvest Riesling, heather honey, marshmallows and spring flowers. A really complex dram yet easy to like. On the palate it has more power and spice than one would expect, somehow not as well integrated as its nose – so let’s add water: yes, that was the key, now the beautiful aroma is translated all the way into the finish. A wonderful oldie, absolutely worth the 225.- Euro.

Score: 90-

Bunnahabhain 21 y.o. Archives 12.1990 – 03.2012, fresh sherry cask #14, 62 btl., 52,3%

Aside from the salt and parma ham, I am getting notes of morello cherries, plums, raisins and marzipan – yep, Christmas cake-like. Pepper and beef jerky complete the nose. On the palate it is less complex and the raisins and the marzipan take the lead along with wet dark wood planks. Then the dram turns dry towards a sherry- and cherry-laden finish. Water brings out even more raisins (some love that), which dominate the finale. The other aromas are there but more in the background. Very drinkable and suitable as a X-mas dram for sure.

Score: 88

Bunnahabhain 21 y.o. TheWhiskyCask 1990 – 2012, sherry butt, 54,0%

Prunes and plums, freshly ground Sicilian coffee, dark chocolate filled with cherry schnaps (Mon Cheri), Vintage Port wine and dark wood are the main elements. In the mouth it is even closer to its sibling from above, but it is more restrained with bigger coffee notes and a drier finish. Water helps a lot here and makes it much more enjoyable and complex. For sherry-heads, though.

Score: 88

Ash and burnt tobacco rise from the glass with some sweet maltiness and peat embers in the back. Kippers, oysters, you name it. Very coastal, but a bit closed without water. It also tastes ashtray-like, way to hot, it has enormous teeth! Let’s tame it with H2O, lots of: Now we’re talking. Hints of caramel, mossy earth, lemon zest, Grand Marnier, heather, iron powder (like a nail), green banana skin and glue widen the range of aromas in this PC after dilution. It also tastes much better now and the finish is longer and more complex, it shifts into an Ardbeg-like direction (iodine, chocolate, etc.), the finish becomes quite amazing ind seductive, surprisingly. Still more on the brutal side and less refined though. Water is essential here, the key to unlock it. I would have called this dram ’nail in the ashtray‘. Not bad but there are much better versions out there.

Ardbeg 5 y.o. Scotch Malt Whisky Society SMWS 33.112 ‚Powerful, elegant and atmospheric‘ 20.12.2005 – 2011, 2nd-fill sherry butt, 252 btl., 60,8%

Comment: It doesn’t smell that young, quite a surpise. A rather typical Ardbeg on the mineral, green and farmyardy side again with nice citrus and Granny Smith apple notes. The peat, resin, smoke, burnt tires on hot tar, sulphur, iodine, discrete chalky oak from those refilled sherry casks (that go perfect with Ardbeg i.m.h.o.), mustard seed, chocolate, spinach and jet fuel aromas have some acidity to them. I am also getting sandy pebbles on the beach. Rather complex for such a youngster, not at all an alcohol-driven nose. The palate is a powerhouse, really punchy without being spicy or unpolished, no offnote here! What an Ardbeg! A monster without being rough. Long finish with big iodine, tires and soot! I used to say that Ardbeg takes some time to unfold, but this dram seems to be an exception. Impressive and very South Coast Islay. Water is not necessary but makes it more accessible to some fainter hearted natures.

Score: 90+

Ardbeg 11 y.o. Scotch Malt Whisky Society SMWS 33.115 ‚Man, that’s braw!‘ 31.08.1999 – 09.2011, refill sherry butt, 578 btl., 55,4%

Comment: This is less powerful and dryer than the 5 y.o. contender because the refill sherry cask has done a good ‚rounding-off the edges-job‘ without being very obvious or sweet (unobtrusive in background) – a rather inactive cask like the one above has been used, but over 100% more time of ageing took place. There are nice white pepper and chili notes, eucalypt, nettles, pu-erh tea, plums, prunes, apples, peat, chalky oak, iodine, aromatic smoke and sulphur. Asian spices and chocolate join in on the palate with sherry traces and green tea – later plums and the peat-sulphur-iodine-combo. If the 112 is the mineral and fresh Riesling from Rheinhessen, this one is your typical Barossa Shiraz (in wine analogy terms speaking). I prefer the Riesling this time.

Score: 89

Comment: Cookie-like (sweet malt) and very complex. All kinds of fruit (also maraschino cherry), green elements (fresh grass, herbs), huge vanilla notes, natural caramel, almonds, quite some coconut, cinnamon, white oak, dry earth and a little peat, all well mixed. The palate is just as fine as the nose with impeccable balance. Sour fruitiness with some berries (cassis), coconut, apple crumble with vanilla sauce, ginger, lemon zest in medium weight show up as well. The fruits get bigger in the finish (hello pineapple), wrapped in gentle peat and oak. It makes you want another glass. Adorable, just like a cookie-coconut dessert!

There also is vanilla, cookie and caramel, but less intense than in the Sea Life release due to louder wood. In addition I am getting cocnut and hazelnut, cinnamon, grass and peat, so the two Lowlanders are not far from each other. On the palate it reveals the Littlemill fruit and grass charm with slightly more wood than usual, somehow it is sweet n‘ sour and oozes beautiful Indian spices. It finishes just like that with the oak in domination. That is its weakness, but on a high level.

At the Finest Spirits Fair in Munich 2012, I found a new independent bottler I hadn’t come across yet: The First Editions. It is imported to Germany by the very nice Sondheims, and the friendly Scottish partner Andrew Laing (Stewart Laing’s son – from the famous Douglas Laing brand – Andrew is the head of this project) was there as well, who let me try an excellent Tomintoul from 1967 (to be reviewed soon). Check out their range here. Today, I am going to review Andrew’s recent Highland Park:

Highland Park 21 y.o. First Editions 1989, 50,9%

Comment:<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-2823" title="Highland Park 21 y.o. In the second row there are glazed doughnuts and candy floss, dusty bookshelves, leather, white pepper, ginger and peat bog notes. The fruity elements (aside from the oranges) consist of canned peaches, red currant and apple crumble. Complex, I’d say. This ‚HP sauce‘ tastes dry and malty on the mid-palate at first, then warming spices and dried fruits (mainly apples) lead into a very well-rounded finish with a mix of the aromas mentioned above. However, it is less impressive than its nose suggested – give this some time. A really good daily dram for allround purposes.

Score: 87

Due to several factors, we get more and more modern whiskies these days. A comparison to wine is making sense: fewer bad ones, but less personality, more resemblance. Don’t worry, enough unique drams are still out there, and that is what makes the category Single Malt so exciting, but they are in a decline, and with more research in the field of wood management (which makes up to about 75% of the final taste, some experts claim) and cost effective production this shift will gain movement in the future. Today, I have picked two drams in the old style for a review (one of them is actually old):

Stewarts Dundee Cream of the Barley ‚De Luxe‘ Blended Scotch Whisky, Reina Import (Italy), 43 gradi

Comment: I had the mini on the photo, the big bottle from the same importer is even darker – and maybe better. A neck-hanger says it is smoothened out with over 20 y.o. whisky – quite promising. The nose is a mix of a typical old blend nose with OBF (Old Bottle flavour with aromas of cardboard, old dusty library etc.) and the one of a great old sherry-cask Single Malt, really well-balanced and not weakish at all. Big notes of coffee, cognac, apricots, cherries, flower-shop aromas, honey and pepper make this seductive. The taste is just like the nose, very quaffable, I must say. Did somebody pour cognac into one of the casks for this by mistake? Curious. It is a ‚whisgnac or cognsky‘ somehow, but in a good way. The finish can’t compete with the wonderful nose, though. Maybe not the most intense and complex dram on earth but a darn decent blend in a long-gone style that could kick some modern malt’s finished ass. A good starter into a tasting session or the world of old whiskies.

Score: 87

Cragganmore 18 y.o. SMWS 37.51, 23.03.1993 – 11.2011, first-fill Sherry Butt, 583 btl., 58,3%

Comment: The first-fill Sherry-Cask speaks in a loud and spicy way with a lot of pepper, but in a classic style. I think this one needs water, but let’s first nose it straight a bit more. Toffee, nettle tea, dark cooked fruits (plums), herbs and honey appear with some time. The sweetish taste reveals sherry and cherry (morello) in a malty surroundment (clever, Pit, it’s a malt), a bit Macallan-like overall, but more herbal altogether. Good quality that leaves the distillery character untouched but underscored. Dark fruits like raisins and the plums and clothes on the line come up again in the long and intense finish. Water helps to broaden the spectrum of aromas, but it performs well with time without water as well.

Score: 88

The Single Cask Collection by Roland Hinterreiter, who also organizes Austria’s Whisky and Spirits Festival on April 13th in Linz, where we will have a stand with some old malts and monsters (visit us there!), has a good hand in chosing his casks. These often come from private people like John McDougall. I had no disappointing dram yet by Austria’s first independent bottler. After reviewing some single bottlings of him before, I am going to check out some of the other releases today and finish the session with a good ole grain from Port Dundas.

Bladnoch 21 y.o. Single Cask Collection 30.1.1990, Bourbon Hogshead, 51,9%

Comment:<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-2688" title="Bladnoch 21 y.o. This one is much better and talkative right from the start with quite a potent nose. Notes of vanilla, grass, flowers, buttered toast, lemon, orange zest, peaches, malt, apples, pears, licorice and raise from the glass in oily fashion. The taste doesn’t let you down either: malt and licorice, then almonds, grass and lime plus a discrete peppery spiciness paired with a whiff of smoke. Unusual but nice. Medium length in the finish.

Score: 88

Linkwood 27 y.o. Single Cask Collection 1984, Bourbon Hogshead, 57,0%

Comment: <img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-2689" title="Linkwood 27 y.o. There were few bottlings I didn’t like. It is essential to give these drams some time to develop. I hope this one is in line with my positive experience. Let’s see: well-balanced, I must say. I am getting unfiltered apple juice, apricots, lemon zests, flower bouquet, spicy white oak with good Bourbon influence (e.g. vanilla, fudge, cloves, some rum notes), cinnamon, marzipan, marshmallows, smoking sticks in an Indian restaurant and sandal wood. It is becoming even more high class in the mouth, wow, this is wonderfully balanced and needs no water in general – but water helps it in terms of accessibility and more flavours come out, whatever you prefer here. Close to perfection in maturity and very complex, it is hard to nail down aromas on the mile-high-layered mid-palate, very fruity (also grapefruit, citrus fruit and white peaches), exotic spices, flavoured marzipan, white chocolate and wonderful oak. The long finish leaves you positively puzzled and demands for another sip to grasp this complexity. At a price point below 100.- Euro, this is a real steal! Please put a bottle of this on reserve for me, Roland.

Score: 91

Blair Athol 12 y.o. Single Cask Collection 4.8.1998, Bourbon Hogshead, 60,3%

Comment: <img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-2690" title="Blair Athol 12 y.o. On the palate, it is hot but also fruity (peaches and pineapple) – a real honest malt with good intensity, somehow reminding me of Lochnagar. Water helps to polish the edges. The long finish focuses on the fruity aspects and adds big vanilla. Old style, good whisky, really fair in price (below 40.-).

Score: 87

Port Dundas 37 y.o., Duncan Taylor Rare Auld, 01.1973 – 04.2010, Sherry Cask 128324, 259 btl., 56,1%

Worlds collide here in a nice way. Fresh despite its age, like a Caribbean breeze in Key West. Sugar cane, big vanilla- and coffee-notes, tobacco, chocolate, Cointreau, limejuice, tinned pineapples, coconut, agave and mint, fudge and great oak (that doesn’t go overboard). The sherry is really discrete. Awesome all the way, if you are into mature rum or grain. The more old grain I try, the more I love them. Another quite undiscovered category…

Score: 90

Some Single Malt connoisseurs don’t try Bourbon Whiskey by category at all, which makes them miss a world of taste. It’s not all Jim and Jack! Openly spoken, the diversity of Bourbon is much smaller than in Scotch Single Malt in general, but nevertheless there are huge quality differences and amazing Southern Belles from Kentucky not to be missed.

Let me mention some of the names you can’t go wrong with. You should try some small-batch-Bourbon by Jim Beam (yes!), e.g., Booker’s and Baker’s. I have also liked Wild Turkey’s Rare Breed, Old Pappy van Winkles Family Reserves (15, 20, 23 y.o.), the expensive George T. Stagg or the 18 y.o. Elijah Craig in the past. However, the two bottlings to be reviewed might even beat all of the above, I think. They are not THE best Bourbons around, but pretty rare and excellent examples. I had them head-to-head:

Willett 14 y.o. Single Barrel Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey, Barrel 1067 for Whiskeykeller, bottled around 2010, 57,6%

Comment: Willett might have produced (and nowadays fills) the world’s finest Bourbons. Every single bottling I had – even their Rye – was a stunner. But these sips can be quite tannic sometimes. Their small family-owned business focuses on old drams now, but their 6 y.o. single casks also rule and show many older bottlings who’s boss. The new stuff can keep up with their legends. Check out their stills and general history, it is very interesting. If you liked Olde St. Nick’s, Johnny Drum, Old Bardstown or Joshua Brooks bottlings from the old days (Willett/Evan Kulsveen), you sure will be into this one. This 14 y.o. nutty (hazelnut, coconut) and spicy (black and white pepper) bottling has a darker and less obtrusive wood note than the Kentucky Crown below but plays it close to the chest at first. Once you work at it, the whiskey reveals notes of pickles, cucumber, natural yoghurt, vanilla, whiffs of tropical fruit and hazelwood. On the palate it explodes to an enormous volume, really mouthfilling, complex and slightly adstringent. The finish becomes brighter and even nuttier in character and adds laurel and vanilla pod to the mix. Size matters!

Score: 91

Kentucky Crown 16 y.o. Straight Bourbon Whiskey, bottled around 2003, 53,5%

Comment: This ugly bottle with its plastic screw cap (see picture above, or the one Jim holds on to) has been a rare myth and one of Jim Murray’s favourites. I tasted it with friends against many other Bourbons and it always came out on top or at least among the better ones. As it is also made by Kentucky Bourbon Distillers, this is Willett as well, somehow. It is slightly darker than the 14 y.o. from above. The nose reminds me of Guatemalian rum a lot because of its immense sweetness and the vanilla/toffee combo. Gluey and spicy white oak wood transports tropical fruit, lemon and lime aromas, glaced pastries and Germknödel (vanilla-plum-dumpling) with great balance but is kept at bay despite 16 years of maturation in Dixie. On the palate, its sweet creaminess takes you in. It is less edgy than the wood would suggest at first, all the elements of the nose can be found again. Smooth but complex! The long and balanced finish is less on power than on finesse and leaves you wanting another glass. Great rummy Bourbon, folks!

Score: 92

Bowmore 1994 – 2008 Berry Bros.

Port Ellen 26 y.o. Three Rivers (Tokyo), 13. Oct. 1982 – 17.

Warm-up Dram (slightly sherried Speysider, gut zum Einsteigen)

Auchentoshan 1975 OB, 21 y.o. (exzellente Rarität in cask strength, Kult und ehemaliger Tasting-Winner)

Royal Brackla 25 y.o. gereift im Fino Sherry Fass (sehr ausgewogener Highland Malt, absolute Allround-Qualität, ehem. Tasting-Winner)

Glenglassaugh 1983 – 2011 OB for Germany 28 y.o., matured in Sherry, finished in Sauternes Cask (ganz neu, cask strength und oberklasse)

Glendronach OB 12 y.o. Sherry Wood from 1970ies for Previ Import (Italien) (sehr dunkle Sherry Malt-Rarität, die immer teurer wird, weil sie so lecker ist: ehem. Tasting-Gewinner)

Bowmore OB Tempest (Batch 2) 10 y.o. aus first-fill Bourbon Casks (ein tropenfruchtig-torfiger Islay Malt, typische Bowmore-Balance, richtig gut und in Cask Strength)

Laphroaig only for Clubs (slowdrink.de/Nürnberg) 1998 aus Sherry Cask in Cask Strength, 90 Punkte bei Serge Valentin

Highland Park (Orkney) 16 years old, 1994 – 2010,
Ex-Bourbon Hogshead, 54,6%

Mortlach 18 y.o., 1993 – 2011,
Ex-Sherry Butt, 57,2%

Miltonduff (Elgin) 13 y.o., 1998 – 2011,
Sherry Hogshead No. 3619, 59,9%

Braes of Glenlivet (Elgin) 21 y.o., 1989 – 2011,
Hogshead Nr. 1030, 54,7%

Glenglassaugh (Portsoy) 28 y.o., 1983,
Refill-Sherry Butt finished in a fresh Sauternes Cask, 49,6%

Bunnahabhain 24 y.o., 1986 – 2010, Sherry Butt 1282, 53,8%

Islay Edition No.1 (Bowmore, Islay) 13 y.o.,
Limited to 3 casks, 46%

Laphroaig 14 y.o. (Islay), 1997 – 2011, Bourbon Hogshead, 43,3%

Unkostenbeitrag: 39.- Euro

1. Ron Malteco ‚Anejo Suave‘ 10 y.o. (Guatemala)

2. Santa Teresa ‚1796‘ Ron Antiguo de Solera 15 y.o. (Venezuela)

3. Rhum Barbancourt ‚Reserve du Domaine‘ 15 y.o. (Haiti)

4. Ron Zacapa Centenario ‚Etiqueta Negra‘ Sistema Solera 23 y.o. (Guatemala)

5. Riviere du Mat Rhum ‚Grande Reserve‘ (La Reunion)

6. Ron Centenario ’30 Anos‘ Edicion Limitada (Costa Rica)

7. HSE (Habitation Saint-Etienne) ‚XO‘ Rhum Extra Vieux Agricole (Martinique)

8. Rhum J.M ‚Cuvee du Fondateur‘ Rhum Vieux Agricole Hors d’Age (Martinique)

9. Port Mourant 33 y.o., 1975-2008, ‚Full Proof‘ Old Demerara Rum (Guyana)

1) Eröffnung ‚Männerladen‘ in Landshut – unser neuer Partner

Also schaut einmal im Männerladen vorbei!

Highland Park (Orkney) 16 years old, 1994 – 2010,
Ex-Bourbon Hogshead, 54,6%

Mortlach 18 y.o., 1993 – 2011,
Ex-Sherry Butt, 57,2%

Miltonduff (Elgin) 13 y.o., 1998 – 2011,
Sherry Hogshead No. 3619, 59,9%

Braes of Glenlivet (Elgin) 21 y.o., 1989 – 2011,
Hogshead Nr. 1030, 54,7%

Glenglassaugh (Portsoy) 28 y.o., 1983,
Refill-Sherry Butt finished in a fresh Sauternes Cask, 49,6%

Clynelish (Brora) 14 y.o., 1997 – 2011
Hogshead No. 5711, 57,9%

Islay Edition No.1 (Bowmore, Islay) 13 y.o.,
Limited to 3 casks, 46%

Laphroaig 14 y.o. (Islay), 1997 – 2011, Bourbon Hogshead, 43,3%

Unkostenbeitrag: 39.- Euro

4) Slowdrink High-End-Minitasting

Pit.
