Martin was so kind as to provide me with some of his latest releases – in times of good whisky being rare, expensive and hard to get hold of as an Indie bottler, he does an excellent job. There are quite some decent malts in his protfolio, and a high general quality. Check it out – and some might still be available:

Aultmore 21 y.o. Maltbarn 1997, 50,7%

Comment: This is fruity-herbal and also juicy, very well-balanced. I am getting strawberry, cranberry, lemon, orange, macadamia-cookie, herbal infusion, and a discrete leafy bitterness in the nose. On the palate more wood Comes through (yet still within borders of good balance), but spice is clearly there.

Score: 89

Glentauchers 21 y.o. Maltbarn 1997 , 48,0%

Comment: A mild and sour-fruity dram, very typical for this underrated distillery. We have lemon and grapefruit, green tea, lemongrass, white peach, a hint of ginger and white pepper, fresh laundry, asparagus, smoked herbs and moss. It reminds me of a racy Riesling , excellent balance, too.

Score: 90

Speyside Distillery 29 y.o. Maltbarn 1989, 49,1%

Comment: This Oldie is very fruity (tropical: orange jam, passion fruit, white peach) but also has some malty sweetness, nice spices, creamy vanilla, like a baroque Palatinian Riesling – great in taste and balance, and sooo juicy!

Score: 90

Braes of Glenlivet 23 y.o. Maltbarn 1994, 48,7%

Comment: This quite rare Single Malt offers autumnal fruit and leafs, (blood) oranges, grapefruit, sour apple rings (Haribo), catnip, some flowery freshness and acidity.

Score: 88+

Glenrothes 22 y.o. Maltbarn 1996, sherry cask, 48.7%

Comment: This one is my favourite in the bunch along with the Springer, so alive and sexy with leather and spice, orange zest, cinnamon, forest honey, Stollen, raisins, a hint of sherry, perfectly balanced and enticing. Mooooreish!

Score: 90+

Springbank 15 y.o. Maltbarn 2003, sherry cask, 48,9%

Comment: Sprinbank back on top with sheer quality and great oak usage – meaty ham, salt and spice, brine, maritime wind, cookies, brighter and darker fruits (peach, warmth of earth, plums, raisins, redcurrant), Parmigiano Reggiano and blue cheese. Tasty stuff.

Score: 91-

Caol Ila 14 y.o. Maltbarn 2004, 53,7%

Comment: A typical Caol Ila in the right age, very herbal, great palate and a very long finish. Good Islay quaffer!

Score: 88

When it comes to vehicles, who wouldn’t like to ride in style: like one of those old Ducati or an exciting vintage Ferrari. Old vehicles, well, actually everything from the old days has more soul than today’s equivalent, that is a given – but the old magic is less practical on the other hand, often even being a rare luxury. Or would you want to commute in the car/motorbike mentioned on a daily basis (considering fuel, reliability, performance, safety, etc.)?

This idea can be transferred to DIAGEO’s new Speyside distillery Roseisle, which became necessary due to the world’s rising demand for whisky (the company even plans to build another biggie soon). In above’s analogy, it is your Porsche Cayenne (but way more energy efficient): great performance, reliability and control in a practical manner. This is the future in distillation, if you like it or not.

The Roseisle complex (3.000 sq metre, 10-12 million litres output per annum possible), just outside Elgin, has been Scotland’s most ambitious and controversial distillery project since thirty years – at a price point of roughly 40 million quid (pounds). The goal was not to replace any other distillery but to have a 10% rise in DIAGEO’s malt portfolio with the ability to distill two (actually three) distinct Speyside whisky styles there: light and grassy as well as a more heavy one (on occasion). This diversity can be achieved mostly by variable condensing technology (details on request). However, Roseisle allows for more tweaking if it became necessary.

By now the first Roseisle whiskies are over three years old and turn out to be very promising (review of the nice new make coming soon). The owners said that they were very pleased with the outcome. According to Douglas Murray (Process and Liquid Development Manager) and Brian Higgs (Malt Distilling Director), there is always room for the unexpected in building a new distillery with an exact style of whisky in mind – even with tons of experience. Negative surprises have occured in other new places before, but aside from small bugs, Roseisle fulfilled all wishes of its designers so far.

It might not be a very romantic distillery but Roseisle is a product of our time: 14 stills, state-of-the-art technical equipment, maltings on site, all highly energy- and cost efficient (very green, yes! Way less CO2 emission, etc.), industrial and very safe. I only found it scary for some minutes (sharing my colleagues thought of a „soulless distillation machine“), but then I became more and more impressed with the place – and came to the conclusion that it simply has a different, a modern soul.

Many comparisons were made between pistons of sports cars and the stills there – for a good reason as you can see in the pictures. Every detail is up-to-date and well-planned, designed to create a great spirit on a global scale. And this paves the way into the future. Kilchoman, as nice as it may be for us enthusiasts, certainly doesn’t (cf. Whisky Magazine 91)?

Of course, Roseisle spirit will mostly go into DIAGEO’s blends, as these still make up the lion’s share (around 94% ) of whisky sales. But there is going to be a Roseisle Single Malt one day. It is too early to tell in which style those bottlings are going to be, heavy, light, or a mix of both, Dr. Jim Beveridge said (Master Blender).

Does Roseisle pose a threat to the other distilleries? If no major slump in demand for whisky occurs the opposite will be the case. DIAGEO can bottle more whisky as Single Malt from their other 27 distilleries than they could before because of Roseisle’s huge output (which isn’t much bigger than at Glenfiddich, by the way). And that is great news. In today’s whisky world there is room for a distillery like Roseisle on the one end and for Bruichladdich on the other. Let’s embrace this diversity. Modernism becomes tradition with time.

Here are some transparencies from a presentation about Roseisle which I could photograph that explain the production process in more detail. Thanks to DIAGEO’s own Nick, Brian, Pat and Duncan for this generous insight and parts of the information given here.

Jonny’s Whisky Essence / Prestige Scotch Malt Whisky-Essence

Glaubt meinem Urteil: klasse Stoff! Das verspricht schon die englische Zutatenliste: Glycerine, natural and identical to natural whisky aromas, oak extract, E150 caramel. Was braucht man mehr?

A Revolution in Whisky-Making

Slainte!

Encoding the SMWS-Codes (FIND THE LISTS BELOW)

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS) disguises their bottlings by giving each distillery a number – by that they avoid legal trouble when a certain distillery name was not allowed to be used by them. So the first number tells you the distillery, the second number enumerates the bottlings: e.g. 33.4 would mean Ardbeg, fourth bottling by SMWS … and if you knew all about this, use the lists as reference. We also linked each name with a link that gives basic information about the distillery (sourced from ‚Whisky-Portal‘).

SMWS Distillery-Codes (first by number, then by distillery):

(NEW ONES INCL. RUM, ARMAGNAC, COGNAC, GRAIN, ETC. BELOW)

Love is in the Air

The more I deal with whisky, the more I see that it is a living product. I just had another experience concerning the improvement of a whisky just by being open a day and being able to breathe some air.

Aeration (shaking) or preopening bottles before the actual tasting can really make a difference, especially with ex-sherry or wine drams. That is why I usually open the bottles for a tasting two weeks in advance.

What a Difference a Day Makes …

Yesterday, I rated the Tobermory MMD for Flickenschild at 88 points. Today, I retasted it for fun’s sake and it was really more integrated, coherent and round. Amazing for one day, isn’t it. I should try this more often because I have noticed this effect several times before. But be warned: I also was a witness to a fragile 1966 Bladnoch by Signatory that fell apart after six weeks. So make sure the dram you decant/aerate is not too delicate.

Time is on my Side (or: The Phenomenon of Bottle Aging)

This also happens with unopened bottles over years: They usually improve. Many experienced whisky connoisseurs in the field of antique whiskies can tell you stories about this phenomenon. Bottlers, who really know their drams, also subscribe to this theory. Silvano Samaroli is one of them. He once mentioned how different, and mostly better, his whiskies had become. As I bottle whisky myself (the Regensburg annual releases), which I try excessively before they go into the bottle, I have noticed positive changes in the closed bottles over time as well (e.g. a rounding effect on powerful peaty drams, better integration of all elements, etc.). So it might very well be that today’s good drams are becoming legends in the future. That is why I put away some Laphroaigs and Lagavulins for an aging experiment. This effect also works with other spirits.

If you want to read more about this, check out the Malt Maniacs E-Pistles. I will also write more about this aging effect -may it be short or long term – soon.

Should a drinks-blog deal with the downsides of C2H5OH, especially when it comes to the health of our kids? Hell, yeah!!! But I don’t want to sound like a hypocritical party pooper, I just feel a responsiblity to say a few words about a new kind of drink as a person who promotes alcohol as well – but for a different reason than the industry does.

A Flood of New Mix Drinks?

I got used to the pre-mixed ‚Lynchburg Lemonade‘ and the Whisky- and Rum-Cola cans that mostly get sold at fuel stations and clubs for teenagers. But now, another flood of spirit mix drinks seems to be rolling in – taste-tweaked whiskies with up to 40% alcohol – do we need these? And is the industry to blame, do they act responsible? They sure do if it concerns profits! Of course, the spirit companies need to make money to provide for jobs (and they did pretty well recently) and produce the drams we love – but should ethics be sacrificed for profit? Or is there nothing wrong with these new releases? Many questions arise at a non black-and white issue. Let’s take it from the top then:

Promotion Example

It is proven that such new easy-to-sip-liquors can foster alcoholism among youngsters because the spirit is masked by artificial sweet pleasant taste and its effect is played down or glorified. Vodka paved the way here. And the ads never say: Isn’t it „awesome and great fun“ to become addicted? The new drinks like tweaked whiskys and vodkas at a high abv (%) are aimed especially at teenagers when we look at their campaigns (even on facebook).

Jim Beam ‚Red Stag‘ (40%) and Winter Jack (15%) as the New Highlights in a Series of Ever-Stronger Alcopops

Winter Jack Apple Whiskey Punch: Can you hear the cash register's bell jingle yet?

There are wonderful small batch Bourbons by Jim Beam and Jack Daniel’s. But their new drinks which are heavily advertised „to have fun with friends“ might be quite pointless to a connoisseur (but I will give them a fair chance by a review soon), and they are promoted like a soft drink, but it actually is high spirit with artificial tastes underneath – one shouldn’t take these too lightly. Maker’s Mark also has a new product of the lifestyle-kind, a ready-mixed Mint Julep at 33%.

Where is the creativity in kids today to mix their own headache-maker, do they really need a premanufactured one? It is not their fault, it is zeitgeist. And marketing knows best: I am sure, there is a huge market for these lifestyle whisky drinks, Bacardi Breezers and so on…it is the same with beer-mixes, because the kids don’t drink enough brewski. Captain Morgan is advertised directly to put it in a mix with Cola, and then you have the real pirate spirit with your party crew. The club crowd doesn’t want the actual taste of beer or the spirits (mostly for a reason – minor quality in taste), these need to taste more like lemonade and should get you drunk without noticing and make you feel good about yourself. Some of these are ‚alcopops‘ and already dangerous below 10%, but at 15% up to 40% with an innocent cherry taste…isn’t this questionable, at least. Shouldn’t we protect our children from such lures? Can they deal with such drinks and are they aware of the consequences?

Promoting Spirit as ‚Cool Juice‘

Adjectives in the ads like „cool“, „cozy“, „juicy“ and „inspiring“ or the promise that the night ‚will be yours/on your side‘ appeal to the kids, and a jumping stag to a new beat does the trick as well, just like the X-mas-like winter landscape ideal for a dram at the fireplace on the new Jack Daniel’s bottle. A clear message is transmitted: Drink these mixes and things are cool….in fact, you are cool! Well, …?

Click for full size: Dangerous Drinks?

Ok, given that some of us had a similar drinking style in our young days, but weren’t we mixing the stuff by ourselves, were creative and saved money (these alcopops are ridiculously priced)? And the alcohol still tasted terrible. We didn’t often drink Jack, Johnnie and Jim or the Captain at full strength. I remember once mixing orange juice, Blue Bols and a cheap Cognac with Coke (all these were remains of my parents in their basement, forgotten there) in a big bottle for a party at age 18 so that the girls would try – everybody hated the mix but we finished the bottle. The following day was to be cancelled for all of us due to mean headaches, and we learned not to mix such stuff again because it was way stronger than we thought. And that was a valuable learning experience after all. Nevertheless, such mixes weren’t promoted anywhere. Ads were only made for the pure stuff then.

Not only Girls should reconsider

Time will tell …

It has to be monitored how the new mix drinks will affect the drinking habits of youths. Maybe this turns out less dangerous than I expect. That’s what I hope for – also because I like and respect many people working for the companies mentioned – and this should stay that way. Aside from that I ask myself a crucial question: Does it take a certain maturity and age to deal with alcohol in general and especially with alcohol’s taste and not with its effect? I am not yet sure what the answer to this might be, but if it should be yes, our kids need more protection.

Maker's Mark's Contribution

Sometimes youngsters ask me about the whisky club and if we drink a lot. Once I start explaining that we look for taste, not the rush of the alcohol in our blood, they wonder. I puzzle their minds by describing that a moderate and taste-oriented approach to drinks can be enriching and full of cultural experience without feeling the booze at all. Such an approach would be much better to teach them a responsible handling of their alcohol intake because they are aware of what they drink. I’d rather take my daughter to a well-moderated tasting than send her to a party with freely available alcopops (the best would be, however, to send her to sports instead). I will close with the words of a barkeeper meaning that one should drink aware and moderate (know your limit by knowing what you drink): Play with alcohol, don’t let it play with you! That is where the real „cool party fun“ is.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________
P.S.: This is not aimed against a particular brand and the mentioned products are just examples of releases that could be a potential problem in the mentioned field. In reviews soon to come, I will fairly judge nicer spirits by them (e.g. are Booker’s and Baker’s Bourbons among my favorites, I proudly am a Tennessee Squire, translated for Brown-Forman at my time at Vanderbilt University and I like the clove-aroma in Maker’s Mark Bourbons). I might even taste the Stag to be fair.

However, I would like to discuss such drinks openly. I would even print an answer / a comment from the industry here as this is an independent blog. Feel free to write us about this topic.

Will man denn bei jedem Schluck wissen, was er kostet?

Und was heißt dabei „relativ“?

Ich ergänze meine Beschreibungen augenzwinkernd mit Bill Murrays Worten zu Suntory Whiskys aus dem Film Lost in Translation: „…but the good news is: the Whisky works!”

Mein Tipp

Geht man in Schottland in einen typischen Pub, so findet man dort immer wieder Whiskytrinker, die ihren edlen Dram – meist in der Maßeinheit ‚fifth of a gill’ – mit zwei Dritteln Wasser auffüllen: „It’s a wee bit smootha n’ slips dun’ well“, mag man da als geschockter Single Malt-Genießer entgegen gelallt bekommen.
