Malt Maniacs

Recent stunners were a Caol Ila 1990 from the Casks of Distinction-series (92-93 points, elegant and coastal), an undisclosed 2008 Bowmore from Sherry casks (91 points, what a bacon plum) and the portrait series triplet for Kirsch Import for their third birthday (Unknown Islay 1991: 92 points; Glenburgie 1995: 90 points); Caperdonich 2000: 90+ points).

In connection with Kirsch, they also dabble in ‚grape and apple juice‘ – try their Armagnacs from Aurian or Cognacs from Pasquet. The Calvados releases were another good leap to broaden the portfolio – we need more movers and shakers in the field of Malternatives. I recommend the 2017 taken from Hampden Estate Rum Casks! Now we can expect another Jamaican pleasure, a Longpond 22 y.o. is about to be released, alongside with a Ledaig 2007. Stay tuned for these offerings.

Glenrothes 36 y.o. Wu Dram Clan 1986, Bourbon Cask 2125, 45,6%

Today, I am tasting a dignified old Glenrothes from a Single Bourbon Cask. Doesn’t sound sexy? Stunad! Glenrothes was a favourite among blenders and still is very underrated as a Single Malt. It is a treasure to be unearthed. Lets try:

It starts off like liquid summer sun, bright, mature, sweet and not really woody. I am getting blood orange, quince, passionfruit, mango, cristallized pineapple, coconut, fudge and salted caramel, vanilla pastry. On the palate it changes to hay, banana and greener elements at first, the dry spice of the wood adds a nice complexity in check. All that is rounded off by peach, ginger and curd cheese-vanilla cake in the long finish. A charming summer dram.

Due to my late post, I am keeping the notes shorter than usual. These releases might be still available somewhere, though – and worth looking out for.

Cognac Jean-Luc Pasquet Lot 79 Grape of the Art 41 y.o. Grande Champagne 2022 52,3%

This Ugni Blanc Cognac matured in a Limousin Oak Cask in a humid cellar and was bottled at cask strength (273 bottles). Again, like many of the GOTA-releases, it has traces of pot still rum – within the cognac range of aromas. First it plays it close to the chest, then it opens beautifully. Spices, smoked herbs, leafy moments, pastry, lemon zest, ginger, vanilla, quinces, apples, white chocolate, plums and gooseberries. On the palate it starts bitter and turns to fruit then. Cooked lemons, spices (even incense), grapes, vanilla, plums, eucalypt take center stage and then lead into a medium-long finish of  elegance.

Armagnac Hontambère 36 y.o. Domaine Pouchégu 1985 Grape of the Art cask #H6 Ténarèze 56,6%

My favourite so far – wow! Ugni Blanc-grapejuice matured in a wet cellar rendered 350 bottles at cask strength. This is dark and juicy, not dry yet deep as the Mariana trench – nuts, raisins, maraschino-cherries, mahogani-wood, cristallized orange skins, lime blossom and what not – mature perfection. The taste keeps up: dark berries, raisins and morello cherries, baking spices, polished tropical woods, incredibly complex like very old sherried Speyside whisky. This Tour de Force finishes long and high class – amazing pick, boys!

Armagnac Domaine de Danis 33 y.o. Grape of the Art 1988 cask #34 Ténarèze 47,6%

The brighter twin of Hontambère, a Folle Blanche eau de vie matured in a wet cellar again, 387 bottles at cask strength. Full transparency as always with GOTA. Very round, pastry-like, dried apricots, bergamot, limoncello, warm cedar wood, wine gums and redcurrant and blueberries, Martinique-rhum. It tastes warm and citric, now daisies on green meadows join cardamom, berries, dark wood spice, plum cake and vanilla. So nice and light, it escapes your senses too quickly unless you drink the next sip. Drift away, my friends, this is a summer dream. And I swear, I had written this note before I saw the image.

Armagnac Séailles 32 y.o. GOTA 1988 – 11.2021, Cask #76, 203 btl., 50% (Cask Strength, Ugni Blanc Grapes, Tenareze)

Comment: This is a Tour de Force, a big boy, not your average Armagnac, also different from the previous Séailles release. Bold, bitter, balsamic and spice-laden start. Jamaica meets Armagnac … lamp oil on mahogany, resin, glue, licorice and cloves accompany candle wax, flowers, mint leaves, brown banana and rum. Holy feathered cow! It becomes sweeter now on marzipan, nuts and grapejuice. I also get some aniseed. Powerhouse, muscle show, not sublte at all. On the palate it arrives rather dry with a combo of wooden bitterness and juicy wine aromas, also becoming sweeter with time. Mulled wine, cloves, nutmeg, tar and resin, many spices. The finish rounds off this wild ride on bitter chocolate and grapes. Altogether, not for the faint-hearted or the purist, this is atypical yet interesting, whatever you prefer. For me, being a fan of harmony and finesse, this is too much – but I know this Armagnac will split the crowd. Try for yourself. I did three times, too much disco for this old dude writing this note. Thanks for letting me taste it anyway, GOTA-team!

Armagnac De Belair 27 y.o. GOTA 11.1993 – 11.2021, Cask #8L, 120 btl., 52,2% (Baco Grapes, Bas Armagnac)

Comment: Way more my style of Armagnac, what a joyous nose of harmony. A classic with reminiscence of an old Sherry Malt, slight noble dryness. Freshly polished mahogany furniture with some dust in forgotten corners, dates, maraschino-cherries and raisins, hazelnuts and coconut touch, menthol, Asian spices, lemon grass, Javanese cubeb pepper, pastry, vanilla, berry-joghurt – Baco bang! It tastes just like the nose suggests, butter and nuts create rancio, Sherry, balsamic notes, well-tuned. The finish is becoming sweeter and fruitier, medium length. A fine Armagnac in an old style. Great choice! Get this!

Score: 89 – 90

Cognac Jean-Luc Pasquet Lot 68-72 Grape of the Art #3, Cask 21, 66.6%

It is very nice to see more high level Cognacs around these days. The guys from ‚Grape of the Art‘ followed that path and went for a Pasquet, a great house. This 1968 and 1972 vintage mix comes from great times. They chose to bottle it at full cask strength, which is not always a success with fine grapsters, but on the other hand, they achieve a power and ‚rumminess‘ they seek (according to their website and mission statement, as they started out with rums as their first choice). Read up on them here on slowdrink in a previous article. Now let’s put this bad boy on the road:

Comment: The abv-level of 66,6% is a tour de force, hence the spirit is closed at first. You need time and probably some water. It comes across amost like a Demerara rum in moments, I kid you not. Nevertheless its classiness shines through. I am getting spices and dark wood, gingerbread, nuts, white pepper, geranium, dandelions, licorice and Turkish delight. A minty freshness, tar, resin, banana, dates and sultanas chime in into this atypical yet impressive nose. To become more Cognac-like, you need to add water as it changes the Pasquet pirate for the better – then it explodes with aromas. It is fun to play around with water here, and it keeps changing along with it. On the palate it remains a wood-driven powerhouse a la heavy rum or Bourbon but with water, rancio, berries and finesse is right there for you. The finish revisits all of the above.

A verdict is difficult, it depends on your taste. Classic Cognac lovers need to add water and it might be a tad too brutal for them. Caroni or Port Mourant fans and connoisseurs of heavy spirits like whisky might absolutely go for it. Choose your side and give it a try.

Armagnac Domaine Cutxan 2006 – 2022 Grape of the Art, Cask #T37, 50,5%

Comment: Made from Ugni Blanc grapes grown in Bas Armagnac, this is a worthy follow-up to its predecessors. The boys had a good hand in picking winners. It starts with a nice grapiness and juiciness, the oak is well-tuned (good balance), Asian spice, gingerbread, licorice, vanilla, dried apricots and peaches, orange peel, lychee, nut cake with milk-chocolate glaze and a trace of leather. It goes down the road of the ‚Le Freche‘ a bit. Water is not necessary but it profits from some drops. On the palate, it shows power and spiciness, then the fruit follows. It has quite a bite, raw tads and corners, unpolished, also a bit ‚rummy‘. The water brings more fruitiness and makes it creamy. The finish delivers grapes and spices from before, becoming fresher and finer.

Just like us, they want to share their passion for fine grape juice, esp. Armagnac, with the world and with whisky connoisseurs in particular. They sampled, traveled and learned that only few products match their expectations. So they wanted to change that and import themselves. They aim for unaltered and undiluted single casks of high quality, a road less traveled but so rewarding. The boys don’t limit themselves to Armagnacs only as their third release is a Saint Lucia Rum.

Let’s try their first releases:

Armagnac Domaine Le Frêche 13 y,o, GotA #1, 2007, 57%

Comment: This was found in the cellars of L’Encantada and stood out for quality, the cask only rendered 150 bottles at cask strength. I am stunned how mature it is after ‚only‘ 13 years. An amazing nose, dense, juicy, powerful yet balanced and with quite some rancio already. There are marzipan, assorted glazed nuts, leather, vanilla, dandelion, marigold, pepper and fruit (plums, raspberries, morello cherries, red- and blackcurrant, berry tea), Indian joss sticks and incense. Deep, dude! In the mouth it starts drier than expected and a bit demerara-esque. Licorice, mahogani and furniture polish, concentrated grape juice with dark fruitiness, chocolate raisins and spices. The heaviness carries on into a wonderful finish that leaves you craving another glass. A worthy first pick!

Armagnac Domaine Séailles 20 y.o., GotA #2, 2000, 54%

Comment: The second release has a nice unearthing story, let me quote: „Today we introduce you to Domaine de Séailles from Ténarèze – a small, artisanal wine & Armagnac producer founded by the Labérenne family and now passionately run by the super sympathetic winemaker Julien. By a stroke of luck, we followed a road sign as we passed through and ended up at a rustic and lovely estate. There we were allowed to explore the entire atmospheric warehouse (with chandeliers!) and were just blown away by the variety of styles!“ Again, cask strength, no additives, a single cask, 195 bottles of joy.

And yep, they picked another winner. This is sporting brighter fruits and oaky elements like caramel, vanilla, Asian spice, pepper, cedar – white oak? It is even more complex than its predecessor. I find glazed pastries, marzipan, nuts, rancio, flowers, tea, fruits (lemons, plums, chriies and berries) and this succulent red grape juiciness. It tastes excellent, even better than the nose, less wood now, more fruit juice and rancio, a complex balance with echoes of the nose. Elegant finish, very quaffable too. Super!

Rum Saint Lucia Distillers 15 y.o., Chairman’s Reserve for GotA & Rum X, 2005, 61,5%

Comment: A real authentic rum that aged in a Bourbon cask in tropical climate only- wow. The make consists of 50% John Dore and 50% Vendôme. And what a funky fella‘ this is, holy cow. Not for beginners, sweet teeth or faint-hearted, more for us suckers of ‚da dirt‘ Imagine a small plastic producer’s backyard near a forest on which all kind of junk is stored: old paint, tar, diesel, rubber, dried-up glue stick (Pritt), bruised blood oranges, bananas and limes and the production hall smells on the side – weird but nice. The forest freshness and earthy tones I am getting now are joined by hints of vanilla, salt, leather, ground pepper, spices (cinnamon, cardamom), minty gum, licorice and black olive tapenade. On the palate it arrives oily and dirty as expected. Sour battery acid meets sweet minty lemon drop (Gletschereis candy), olives, rubber and pine cones. It is becoming sweeter with fruit, almonds and spice, huge complexity, rewarding finish. Don’t get me wrong, it is an unusual and funky one, but very interesting and of high quality. But you should be into such rums.

Cognac Jean-Luc Pasquet ‚Organic‘ 2006-2021, Cask 27, Grande Champagne, Kirsch Import, 50,1%

Comment: This is as ’single‘ as it gets! From their own hand-picked organic grapes, this eau de vie was self-distilled on gas, and filled into single casks. I kid you not, it starts out like a Calvados. So many apple aromas (pie, green apple, compote, tart tatin) and vanilla jump out of the glass, then big banana, pears, raisins and butter join in. Sandal wood and oak are also playing a major part. Fresh linen, lime-infused cake glaze and white chocolate complete this unusual but harmonious nose – fresh!

On the palate it arrives sweeter than expected, mainly on baked apples, butter and oriental spice. Round and sound – winey acidity, grapes and yes, Calvados, show up. Very alive!

It finishes on medium-length with spice from exotic woods, fruit (apple, banana, grapes) and vanilla pod. A wild and unusual ride with a fresh experience in the field of Cognac! One to learn a lot from …

Cognac Vallein Tercinier ‚Small Batch‘ 41-43 – 2021, Kirsch Import, Bons Bois, 78 btl., 48,2%

Comment: A rare Single Estate and cask strength Cognac gem from WWII. which is now sold by a German importer – how times have changed for the better! That alone is heart-warming. It has spend its life in cask until 2006, then in Dame Jeannes (glass balloons). Let’s nose: ooops, who put the Bowmore 1968 in here? Almost kitsch in terms of fruitiness (passion fruit, guava, papaya, pink grapefruit, apple, lychee, plum, raisins, cherry) and berry aromas (all kinds, cassis etc.), uber-fruity, joined by minerality and the discreetest old wood – almost purely spirit-driven! It also plays fir twigs, moss, humidor, rancio, vanilla, lilacs, violets and so much more – in perfect balance like a finely tuned stereo!

It builds itself up on the palate, from mild to strong, from floral, acidic and wood-spice elements to huge exotic fruits, berries and a nutty rancio aspect with sweets! An amazing development in my mouth! I recommend big sips here – don’t miss this!

The finish should be illegal! All is reunited like on a huge water colour painting in which every now and then another highlight shines out. A piece of art, and not tired at all! Amazing pick with history – get it!

Cognac Bache Gabrielsen American Oak (Double Maturation) VSOP/4 y.o. for Kirsch, Single Cask, Fins Bois, 64,1%

Comment: This is a crazy one, very unusual. The producer with Norwegian roots is known for going modern and special ways in Cognac maturation. We loved the blue XO at cask strength from 15 years ago. This new release for Germany has spent its life in French and Tennessee oak and the Ugni Blanc grapes came from the Fins Bois region. Not your classic stats. But boy, taste this powerhouse. Heavy Hervé-style :).

With this one you can fool most people at a tasting – mix it among the whiskies and nobody complains. The mature nose is clearly showing American oak characteristics like vanilla, pineapple, banana, peaches and coconut. The grapes and raisins play second fiddle. Also there is some marzipan and white oak. Basically like a Pina Colada from the Charente! It tastes and swims well, no off-notes at all, vanilla-cream-style, and: more cognac shines through now. Honey, flowers, espresso, creme brulee, hints of tropical fruits. The sheer power is fun and the balance is surprising. Of course, it is no complexity monster after four years of maturation, but it tastes darn good! Not for cognac purists, but great for whisky fans and people who love to transgress borders. Simply a good drink. Stay curious! The long finish leaves you puzzled by what you just had. Cool and fun choice!

Finest Jamaican Rum, over 25 years old, Duckhammers / Wu Dram Clan, 164 btl., 50,1% 

Comment: I love the label. And estery rums. So let’s dive into the parrot’s feathers: Often older Jamaicans lose their funk, but here it is well-preserved yet more balanced and mature – a great nose! It starts out with old brown bandaids soaked in iodine, olive tapenade, almonds, ripe banana, star fruit, hot mulch, glue and bitumen – all with a sweet overtone, enticing! Gletschereis drops (a classic German sweet for refreshment from way back, lemony-minty in taste) meet caramelized burnt sugar, licorice, veggie stew, burnt raisins, roots, fence coating colour can, malaga ice cream (rum-raisins), Yuzu and Sicilian lemon.

It tastes likewise and so goooood – noble funk! Milder than one would expect (great alcohol integration), all on high class, lending itself perfectly for the early session of estery rums – or for an introduction into this category on highest quality. Long finish! I NEED MORE.  On the side, this probably is the most guyanese Jamaican I had, which is not a bad thing – both worlds meet here. Wow. Me want parrot now!

Ledaig 25 y.o. Wu Dram Clan / Duckhammers / The Whisky Kingdom / Kyoto FWS 1995 – 2021, Hogshead 143, 50,6%

Comment: Education first: The peated Tobermory has risen to stellar quality in the vintages 1972/73, when they shared the malted barley with Brora, Talisker and such, as rumors go. Try and you know what I mean. After these years, Ledaig somewhat changed into a lesser peaty, leathery dram with somewhat volatile distillates, not often bottled. Only after 2005, the heavy peat returned with partly great results and higher outturns in the indie market.

This specimen is a perfect example of an outlier of the good kind. I am glad the Wu-sters dug up this one. After a great younger Kraken which I loved, they follow up with the second octopus.

The nose clearly is in the in the sour-fruity and spicy camp, autumnal somehow (fallen leaves), very nice and off the beaten track. At first I am getting tangerine, raspberry, kiwi, kumquat, grapefruit, peach, lemon drops, ginger, malt, yeast, leather, willow wood (aspirin, anyone) and glazed nut pastries. Inriguing mix. There also is sheep wool in a woollen mill, wet earth and discrete peat, hay, ginger bread, hazelnut, vanilla, incense, licorice, egg salad, brine and pepper. Compexity! It keeps getting fruitier by the time.

On the palate it is powerful and laden with spices, sour fruits and leather. Old wood meets shoe shine on fine leather brogues, willow branch, peach and licorice again. Water is not hurting it, try as you please.

It finishes long while becoming sweeter, the spices remain, nuttiness also joins the crescendo. The perfect dram for this time of year on a walk through the forest. Beware of tree krakens!

Ardbeg 20 y.o. OB 24.05.2001 – 10.06.2021 Wu DRAM Clan’s Private Reserve, Refill Bourbon Barrel 348, 155 btl., 46,6%

Comment: Let’s start by NOT arguing about its price. It is a personal decision to splurge on great booze, which this undoubtly is, and such are prices of Single Cask releases by Ardbeg or DIAGEO these days. No one has to buy, so leave it there. I think it takes big hairy balls to bring such babies to the market. So kudos – why not! We don’t judge price , only quality matters.

Many people were so keen on trying this. I am glad to be in the position now, I gave it two sessions. Not the shabbiest of moments :).

A typical Ardbeg right from the start, the refill Bourbon barrel allows the oily spirit to shine. Weapon oil (Ballistol), tires, burning pine cone, iodine, peat, leather, ointment, tarry rope with kelp, lemonized oyster, chalk, minerality, coal, aloe, menthol and mezcal, dirty harbour smells, cannon smoke – the whole spiel of a great Ardbeg in sweet background, aaahhh.

It tastes even better than it noses as it takes the direction of old-style Ardbeg now on leather, soot, flinty smoke and pine resin – no off-note here, just classic mature South coast Islay goodness with the typical slim and sweet profile in the middle, which every Ardbeg should have (sorry 8).

The amazing finish swells with iodine, soot, peat, flint, chalk, hints of espresso and burnt tires. A very good mellow cask that takes us back into the 1970s for moments!

Cognac Grosperrin No. 71 Heritage 1971 – 2021 – for Flickenschild – Petite Champagne, 52,3%

Comment: This was chosen as a Malternative at full proof – a Cognac for whisky drinkers that Guilhem Grosperrin inherited somehow (it was originally sold for two NGOs) and took care of it. Now it was bottled exclusively for Flickenschild / whizita.de. The story is on the bottle to read up on. Let’s taste it:

The oak is playing a role after 50 years, but it is well in check – malt heads will enjoy this (vanilla, pepper). Floral elements (lilac, lavender, violets, roses, mint, lemon verbena, flowerpot) meet glazed lemon cake (Amerikaner), white chocolate, cinnamon and nutmeg. Beeswax, tobacco… more and more aromas emerge, it needs time to unfold. Then nutty rancio joins in and many (dried) fruits like apricots, lemons, limes, orange skin, wild strawberries, mirabelles, lychees and gooseberries. Complex and balanced, the alcohol is well-integrated.

On the palate sweet and sour elements battle like in a familiar westernized Chinese duck recipe. All in all, it is darker now. Raisins, figs, dried apricots, nuts, lemony tastes and waxy maturity make their presence felt.

The finish takes you on a journey through all the stages from before, very exciting and long.

Jean-Luc Pasquet Cognac Lot 68 – 72 Kirsch Import Limited Edition, 1968…1972 – 2021, Fins Bois, 59,1%

Comment: This multi-vintage assemblage (1968 – 1972) from the Fins Bois was Sebastian’s first pick in his role as grape ambassador for Kirsch Import. And these crus really combine into a super power. A dream of a Cognac, which wasn’t to be expected from its sheer stats – such stuff usually vanishes in the blends of big houses. With this example you can discover how great this alternative way can be, I am so glad it was bottled this way – read why:

Enticingly sweet, nutty and leathery start, a tightly-knit and balanced potpourri of darker elegance. A fist inside a velvet glove. Juicy, balsamic complexity, quite some rancio, soaked spice cake, cherries, dates, maracuja, kiwi, cristallized orange, marzipan, macadamia, nutty pastry (Nusshörnchen), chocolate, vanilla, juniper berries, tobacco, humidor. Crazy!

It tastes as good as it noses, more berries like cassis chime in into the complex mix, even black truffles can be found. And it swims well, try water too, just amazing. This is truly a legendary cognac.

The crescendo leaves you crying for more of this awesome grape juice. Amazing pick! With each tasting session you love it more as it has a drinkability despite its power. Don’t buy, leave more for me !

Before I differenciate, both have the Caroni funk and typical traits for these years:

Common notes of both: Jungle undergrowth, banana skin, camphor, ointment (Ichthyol), iodine, resin, sanitary napkin, tar, scented tobacco, fresh mint, rose stems and vanilla – all in all a heavy load, almost overburdening the palate. Let’s go from crazy to nuts:

CARONI 1998 – 2021 Single Cask Trinidad Rum, Cask #2109, 226 btl., 62,2%

Comment: This is the rounder and fruitier one with berries, more accessible and not as dry as its partner – aetherial clouds of aromas somehow. Along the notes above I am getting a deep and spicy impression, huge complexity. Berries, dragonfruit, babana, plum, orange zest, rum-raisin ice cream (Malaga), leather, bitumen, jute sack filled with coffee beans, cinnamon chewing gum, ski waxing workshop, glue, cedar wood, forest floor, mulled Christmas wine (nutmeg, clover, cinnamon, ginger, red wine, etc.), daisies, poppy seed pastry with sugar icing (‚Mohnschnecke‘), new car oil and what not – a crazy ride. It is intense yet balanced, spicy and fruity on the palate, water straightens it out and pushes the berries and tropical fruit center stage, but it can be enjoyed pure as well. The finish is long and soothing. However, we are talking heavy duty here over all.

CARONI 1997 – 2021 Single Cask Trinidad Rum, Cask #59, 224 btl., 60,6%

Comment: This is the spicier, drier and dirtier one, it bites like a jungle viper – no prisoners taken. Tar, licorice, old oil, resin, olive tapenade, hot mulch from jungle wood, rotten banana skin, nutmeg, pepper, chili, burnt caramel, cocoa, juniper berries, painted pine cone and quite some wood influence. A Voodoo Monster that will split the audience. The palate is a full-on attack, peppery spices and woody dryness bite with adstringency, then relief, wow, dryness gone suddenly. Banana, oak and undergrowth are dominant. I recommend water for this one, as it levels out the aggression and allows the subtle berries and fruit to be discovered – but it also depends on your daily shape. On some days, pure is fine – a great one either way. Somewhat brutal but complex, and therefore, very entertaining. Muscle rum, looong finish!

Nein, der Whisky geht uns nicht aus (nächstes Jahr kommt der von vielen Vortastern heiß erwartete Sherry-Laphroaig mit sehr alten Anteilen, 2027 ist auch auf bestem Wege), doch als wir dieses heute zu reservierende Material gefunden hatten, gab es kein Zurück, das müssen die slowdrinker haben.

Obwohl ursprünglich nicht so geplant, musste das ‚Islay-Nusshörnchen‘ in die Flasche! Pit meinte: „Noch nie habe ich so eine weiche Komplexität mit Rancio und tertiärer Finesse getrunken… Ihr würdet Euch ärgern, den Essence verpasst zu haben, wenn Ihr ihn probiert habt“.

Und Pit weiß in diesem Feld, wovon er spricht: Lange vor dem neuen Hype um Rum, Armagnac, Cognac und co. stand er schon auf Messen mit feinen anderen Edelspirituosen neben Whisky und er bewertet diese auch in Jurys oder wählt Fässer für Produzenten aus. Den Essence bekam aber kein anderer!

Pit wählt für den Club nur aus, was er wirklich liebt, und dann arbeitet er teils Jahrzehnte mit seiner Erfahrung daran, um ein Elixier zu erschaffen. Bei dieser Abfüllung stand insbesondere das Polieren jeder Alkoholspitze und das Vereinigen der episch alten Anteile zugunsten tiefer balsamisch-nussiger Rancio-Reife mit viel Marzipan im Vordergrund.

Der Essence of the Grape 2025 ist eine Malternative der Extraklasse. Wer Sherry-Bottlings, alten Rum und vor allem edle Cognacs oder Armagnacs hohen Alters liebt, wird diese Abfüllung feiern – und auch die Islay-Fans finden Ihr Eldorado. Der Essence ist sowohl ein ‚Everbody’s Darling‘, weist aber auch viel Komplexität für den zweiten und dritten Blick auf: Eine Kathedrale eines gelungenen Experiments, die vom Experten bis hin zum Laien jeden verzaubert zurücklässt!

Unglaublich harmonisch und weich fügen sich die Einzelteile zu einer undurchdringlichen Geschmackskugel zusammen, die langsam immer weitere Schichten freilegt. Man reist von der Charente und dem Bas-Armagnac bis nach Islay, und das mit einem Umweg in die Karibik! Sehr spannend und noch dazu lehrreich, da man merken kann, wie sich sehr alte Destillate geschmacklich annähern.

Das Ganze ist edler und trockener als Brandys oder der Vorgänger, aber kein superdry Armagnac-style, sondern genau ‚on the spot‘, geradezu saftig (Umami pur), weich, aber mit genug Druck! Einfach in der Mitte der Glückseligkeit für optimale Trinkfreude, die Dich verleitet, nachzufassen.

Das Ziel des Blendings war es, die verspielt-parfümige Blumigkeit des Hauptanteils Cognac zugunsten der buttrig-nussigen und balsamischen Rancio-Noten etwas herunterzuspielen, ohne die Frische und Floralität (Zitrusfrüchte, Lindenblüte, Bergamotte) einzubüßen, die komplexe Armagnac-Tiefe und Struktur ohne das beinhart Trockene zu ergänzen und die faszinierende Gewürzkomplexität anderer Aquavit- und Brandysorten (Burgund, Bordeaux, Mosel, Jerez, Piemont, etc.) in geringem Maße hinzu zu komponieren.

Weitere vielseitige Tiefe kommt auch von den vielen verschiedenen Refill-Fässern, wobei kein Stil am Ende dominiert. Man findet alles, in Balance, nichts drängt sich vor. Der Essence ist sein ganz eigenes Ding, und somit eine Weltpremiere flüssiger Art.

Die warmweichen Aromen, die auf Nase und Gaumen strömen, reichen von Rosinen, Pflaumen, Kirsch-Gateau, Marzipan, Nussigkeit aller Art (Nocino Walnusslikör, Mandeln, Haselnuss, Kokos, Macadamia), Muscovado-Zucker, Kolanuss, Portwein, Beeren (Cassis, Himbeeren), Morchel-Rahmsauce, Bratenjus, Kräuter, Zimt und orientalischen Gewürze, Humidor, Balsamico Tradizionale ‚extra vecchio‘, Edelkakao, Vanille, Karamell, Süßholz und dem Kuchenguss der Zitronen-Tarte über sehr diskrete mineralische Gesteinstöne und einer Spur Islay mit maritimem Touch, Erde, Petrol und feinem Rauch glühenden Torfs bis hin zur muffigen Kalkigkeit nasser Warehouses, durch die ein alter Franzose mit Pfeife prüfend zieht. Alles in allem das Thema saftig-süße Reife wie alte Sherry-Macallan, vorrevolutionäre Kubaner und beste historische Cognacs mit ungewöhnlichen Gegenspielern in der Art ganz leichter balsamischer Bitternoten sowie beruhigender Bodentöne, die alles interessant und in Balance halten. Ein ultrareifes Rancio-Traubendestillat, in dem Rumrosinen-Anklänge und kaledonische Härte melancholische Lieder anstimmen, die die Seele berühren. Poliert, rund, endlos, perfekt. Having been a brandy buff and collector for many years, the situation is exciting for me and our club. Slowdrink has always been focused on being open for various drink categories. We have released Brandy many years ago, I met with great producers to learn, educated people in tastings and at fairs about it and I blend products and judge ‚grape juice‘ in competitions. So finally our enthusiasm is catching on. Therefore, I forgive the lack of experience and knowledge of some newbies in this huge and difficult field for the love of many new Cognac and Brandy lovers who come from the whisky world and expect equally high standards of quality and transparency. This helps Brandy too … and it helps whisky people develop finer sensoric skills because Cognac and its brothers are way harder to differenciate.

The grape distillers did many things long before whisky producers did, and many Scotch and Irish techniques originate in France and Spain as Cognac was the main noble spirit of the world back then and for so many years – phylloxera helped other fine spirits become visible but Cognac stayed king way into the 1980s. Nowadays it lost some track in Europe, but this is about to change – if the Charente learned from mistakes and can adapt. I also see a rise in quality in Grappa, another very exciting drink distilled from pomace.

Cadenhead, LMDW, SMWS, Maltbarn, WhiskySponge and others have started to release single cask Cognac and Armagnac recently, some great, others atypical. Woody and fruity brandies like those of Vallein Tercinier become sought after because they can offer what only very expensive old Malt Whiskies render in terms of matured esters (e.g. Bowmore fruit and berries) despite not being typical. The departing from burdening tradition has negative sides to it but I like the general development to a large extent and wish that a broader variety of producers and crus will follow soon. We will also release something again in the future. Stay tuned!

Come to a tasting and learn more, e.g. rancio, boise, prune juice faking, wine choice and crus, oak differences etc. – Brandy is awesome and historical.

Our friends at Wu Dram Clan joined the crowd recently and have released a very old VT from a single cask from the renowned cru of Grand Champagne. I feel confident to test-drive this baby now:

Comment: What makes older VT great is the immense complexity. We have it here too. A mix of spicy (cinnamon, cardamom, vanilla, pepper from wood, oriental spices), fruity (crystallized fruits like apricots, plums, figs, sour cherries, apple rings and berries), floral (violets, lilac, elderflower, marigold, daisies), bitter (lemon and orange peel, Italian apero bitters) and sweet elements (white donut, sugar-coated pineapple, marzipan, marshmallow) in fine harmony boggles the mind. What a spirit, so vivid yet mature! Little to no rancio. It is slightly on the woody (hey, it is 53 years old!) and floral side on the palate at first, then the big wave of aromas follows suit. It lands so softly and mildly, more berries and cassis notes emerge. As a single cask, it has atypical and exciting moments. In comparison, the VT Hors d’Age is darker, rounder and sports quite some rancio, this version is spicier, drier and more complex, a wilder ride all in all. Hold on tight, it is a world-class Cognac that will blow you off the rocker if you like it wild and challenging!

Cognac 49 y.o. ‚Petite Champagne‘ 1970 – 2019, barrel, 49,2%

Comment: We don’t know the producing house but I have a hunch. It is very well-balanced, and no overboarding wood disturbs the pleasure full of nuts, plums, pineapple skin, tobacco smoke, Oyster Sauce, flowers, Asian spices, fruit cake with dried and caramellized fruits. Medium rancio though, this is more on subtleties on the lighter side – it unfolds lik an onion, give it time..it gradually becomes darker in character. medium-long finish. A high class Cognac, very typical. Not a 1960s-Bowmore-esque Berry Bomber, though (if you search for that unsusual profile).

Irish Single Malt 29 y.o., 1990 – 2019, barrel, 48,5%

Comment: When Irish Malts become this old, they become rare and expensive. Also did the load of older Emeralds dry recently, so this is really cool. This dram is still malty and has some wood spice to counter enormous tropical fruitiness, berries and lemongrass. Creamy, milky too, somehow: pineapple-vanilla milkshake, anyone? On the palate it plays out its strength the most: Mangos meet berries and blackcurrant. Yeah. I am a sucker for uber-fruitiness. Medium-length finish. Maybe not the best Irish from these years but certainly a great one. Got me a bottle…

Irish Single Malt 21 y.o., 1998 – 2019, barrel, 51,3%

Comment: A good age when usually fruitiness explodes in Irish drams. Is this in its prime yet? Yes. Wow, I like it. Bushmills 21, but more naked. Fresh and fruity, berries, vanilla, blackcurrant. All the way well-balanced, icecream topping quality. Absolutely typical, recommendation.

Irish Single Malt 16 y.o., 2003 – 2019, barrel, 51,9%

Comment: How does the youngest Irish contender hold its own? It is a nice example of a grassy and lemony version, discrete oak influence (spice), coconut too. Creamy, fruity, smooth, honest. Pistacchio. A good dram.

Littlemill 27 y.o., 1992 – 2020, hogshead, 52,3%

Comment: Thyme on roasted lamb, other Mediterranean herbs, pineapples, apple juice, Pak Choi, vanilla pod, pine cone, traces of Bourbon. Fragile and elegant all the way.

Score: 91

Secret Highland 34 y.o.,  1985 – 2019, hogshead, 47,0%

Comment: I like the pink grapefruit in this (hint – hint), nice old profile with big fruitiness and no offnote, fresh too, so spirit driven. Mangos, berries, blackcurrant, pineapple, maracuja and what not. Is there a smoked pink grapefruit? It would taste like this. Who needs distillery names

Score: 91+

Arran 17 y.o.,  2002 – 2020, Barrel, 49,2%

Comment: Spices on apples and pineapples, coconut, cappuccino froth, vanilla, peaches, Tarte Tatin, honey, pear cider, rosemary, Marshmallows, ozone, mossy brine. A fine Arran.

Score: 88+

Ben Nevis 23 y.o., 1996 – 2020, hogshead, 47,6%

Comment: Lychee sweetness, peaches, mango, herbs, roses, Alpine cheese, vanilla, apple crumble, sugar-coated nuts, honeyed malt, sandalwood candle, almost no wood. Amazing Ben Nevis from a great vintage for this distillery, fruitier than usual. Wow. This is en par with the Maltbarn release from last year which I adore as well.

Ledaig 25 y.o., 1995 – 2020, hogshead, 48,5%

Comment: Quite an aged Mull malt, rare indeed. The peat is secondary here, broken down into coastal aromas now. Malty, chalky, mineral, salty, briny. Air-dried ham, kiwi, peaches, melon, Atlantic seabreeze, wool, windswept sheep shack wood (sorry :)), leather, pepper. A pan of scallops deglazed with Vermouth and whisky. Aaah, this grows on you with every sip.

Score: 89+

Andreas Isopp

I like it when things are done correctly, thoughtfully, nerdy. Such is the case with the freshly launched rum importer ‚Rum-Exchange‘ run by Andreas Isopp. Our friend Andreas does source real rums and bottles them at cask strength without any additives – all that with full transparency, partly even informing on the place of maturation  (tropical > continental). Some of his rums even undergo finishing in Sherry casks. As a side note, the bottles really look cool. Now let’s review their taste, starting from early to latest release date:

#001: Jamaica – Trelawny 5 y.o., 2013 – 2019 Oloroso Finish, 355 btl., 61,5%

Comment: This, of course, is a rum from Hampden Estate.  It aged in ex-Bourbon casks for three years, then it was transferred to Oloroso wood for the remaining period of aging. Usually I am sceptical of Sherry finishes in rum, but with a funky and dry ester-monster, it might just add nice dimension. And exactly this happened. The sweet Jerez wine compements and fits like a glove, it polishes not too much of the exotic spiciness and leaves brighter fruitiness alive. Really exciting! One of the finest rums in the last months, I have to admit. I am getting leather, snus tobacco, many spices, very mature tropical fruit, citrusy elements, multi-vitamin-juice that is starting to ferment, resin, tar, and: pressed sour cherries. All these aromas are well-integrated and play with each other peacefully: earthy funk meets sweetness and leaves you craving another sip to grasp this complexity. What a great first release!

#002: Jamaica – St. Catherine 5 y.o., 2013 – 2019, Ruby Port Finish, 350 btl., 59%

Comment: Same idea as above, yet a different sweet wine and distillate from Worthy Park, which I usually adore. However, this one worked out only ok, not great. Port finishing is difficult though. This rum aged four years in tropical climate (Bourbon cask) before it was ‚deported‘ (forgive this pun) – one year Port finish in continental climate left its marks: the distillate is tamed (some mnight love that), for me a tad too much. It is tightly-knit and oozes raisins and various kinds of berries, Jamaica reggaes on in the background only (aromas of an empty leather bag of weed, dark wooden pipes, orange and lemon zests, maybe even Usain Bolt’s rubber running shoes On the palate the aromas still battle, tensions can be felt. The wood influence is a bit doctored, but I think this rum has many friends who are into cask-driven whisky and rum. Junkies of typicality might dislike it. Anyway, a very interesting and tasty learning experience (Jamaica vs. Port).

#003: Belize – Traveller’s Distillery 10 y.o., 2019 – 2019, ex-Bourbon (tropical aging), 300 btl., 60,8%

Comment: Traveller’s Distillery struck me as a great source for naturally sweeter rums (Middle American style) with some weight to them, something for the sweet teeth ready to step up a notch on the ladder of quality. And this release lends itself perfectly for converting people to real rum. A very mature nose with ample oak hits the nostrils like a pastry, more in a style of old Domenican Republic releases at first, but then it shows its home Belize in clearer ways: Vanilla, caramel, fat nutty oils (Macadamia, almonds, coconut) and cedar wood rule over lime blossom, honey, cinnamon and cream. Spicy elemenst chime in (chili, resin, kurkuma) to set a counterpart. The palate is more elegant than you would expect from such a baroque nose, this rum is never cloying yet sweet n‘ oily – roasted sugarcoated nut heaven which lingers on quite a while. The wood spices balance the sweetness here. A maelstrom of sheer goodness if this style is yours.

#004: Guyana – Port Mourant 11 y.o., 2008 – 2019, 250 btl., 58,3%

Comment: PM, my favourite mark. And it is a brighter version of demerara juice which gives me great hopes for an excellent spirit-driven experience. YES! So typical of Port Mourant, which I consider as one of the finest distillates around. Sorry, but wow: I succumb to this great complexity and balance in such a powerhouse. Wet humidor, olives, band aids with iodine, grilled Sunmaid raisins, snus and Virginia tobacco, bruised dates, tar … for a start. Then mentholated sweet drops („Eisbonbon“), prunes, warm mulch, polished magogani, Romeo y Julietta cigars (unlit), leather, vanilla, licorice, pine cones, pepper and diesel come to the fore. A carousel of crazy aromas, so wonderfully awkward yet fitting together perfectly. A full-score nose! On the palate it is less wild,  sweeter than expected and very balanced. It shows high drinkability and Finesse, an exciting rum. If only it had not been tamed this would be the T-Rex. An absolute recommendation at this price below 90 Euro!

#005: Barbados – Foursquare 2009 – 2020, 59%

Comment: This is a preview, the rum is not released yet (probably at the end of March). Thanks for the advance sample, Andreas! So we Keep this shorter: you can expect a great natural rum again, very balanced and soft for its make. This Foursquare is fresh and displays lemon balm, coconut, vanilla, green tea, herbs, chewing gum, mulch, cedar, soft smoke, olives, licorice, cinnamon, kurkuma and peppers. Something for everyone, also for hotter days. Elegant Barbados.

Die Geschmacksbeschreibung und die Botanicals sollen an eine Bergwiese im Sommer erinnern (Arnika, Silberdistel, Frauenmantel, Bergkräuter). Als Kind der Alpen kenne ich diese Gerüche … bin gespannt:

Beschreibung: Ohne die guten Notes des Herstellers kopieren zu wollen stimme ich in großen Teilen zu. Ein insgesamt klassischer Dry Gin, jedoch mit viel „Terroir“. Die deutlichsten Aromen sind tatsächlich Bergwiese (warmes Heu, Trockenblumen, Almblüte) und Limette, dazu etwas Bergamotte, Salbei, Pfeffer und Honig. Der Wacholder spielt zurückhaltend im Hintergrund, helle Geruchsfarben prägen das Bild. Am Gaumen ist der Gin eher leicht süßlich und sehr weich, mild-wärmend mit dezenter Würze. Orange Limette, Kamille, Wacholder, Rosmarin, Almwiese, die ganze Heidi in akzeptabler Balance. Den vom Hersteller als mächtig bezeichneten Nachklang ist eher von mittlerer Länge und sehr rund, es klingt warmes Bergheu und Wacholder in feinen Wellen an. Insgesamt gutes Mittelfeld mit Bonuspunkten für Originalität und Regionalität, das Thema ist top umgesetzt. Wer es weich und alpin liebt, ist hier genau richtig. Mir fehlt etwas Druck und Balance am Gaumen, doch das ist immer Geschmackssache. Ein spannendes Produkt ist dieser Eidgenosse auf jeden Fall. Probieren!

Unsere preisgekrönten Verkostungen in Sachen Whisky, Whiskey, Rum, Cognac und co finden seit fast 20 Jahren im Sinne des non-profit-Gedankens statt und finden immer mehr Liebhaber. Bei uns geht jeder Cent in die zu probierenden Spirituosen und es gibt keinen Verkauf oder inkompetenten Eventagentur-Mist. Die Spirituose und das Wissen sowie die Sensorik stehen im Zentrum – deshalb begeistern wir vom Beginner zum Experten und haben uns zum größten Veranstalter für Tastings entwickelt. Ca. 80 Verkostungen finden pro Jahr statt. Verpflichtungen gibt es keine, jeder kann teilnehmen.

Kompetenz und Authentizität

Bei uns moderieren anerkannte Experten und Autoren, bekannt aus dem TV und den Medien, mit viel Herzblut und Passion. Die Drinks (auch atemberaubende Raritäten) stammen mitunter aus Pit Krauses bekannter Sammlung. Verschiedene Events in ganz Bayern – und bald im Whisky- und Spirituosenmuseum

Unsere Seminare, Tastings und Dinner finden in ganz Bayern und darüber hinaus statt, vorwiegend aber in Regensburg, München, Augsburg, Nürnberg / Erlangen sowie in Kelheim. Neben diesen Veranstaltungen gibt es gelegentlich niveauvolle Junggesellenabschiede, Geburtstagsfeiern und Firmenevents (Weihnachtsfeier einmal anders), die wir gerne nach Ihren Wünschen ausrichten können. Unser Zentrum ist die Region Oberpfalz / Niederbayern sowie Oberbayern, doch auch Schwaben und Franken buchen uns regelmäßig.

Beispielsweise haben wir im Bergwerk, auf der Walhalla, in der historischen Tram, der Jurte, der Mühle, auf dem Strudlschiff, in der Sternwarte und dem High-End Hi-Fi-Studio, bei diversen Köchen oder in Schlössern und Havana-Bars verkostet oder sog. Whisky Walks durchgeführt. Schottische Brennereien (Ardbeg, Lagavulin) haben bei uns Ihre Jubiläen gefeiert und Weltpremieren vorgestellt. Stets versuchen wir, etwas Einzigartiges zu bieten.

Benrinnes 18 y.o. Whisky-Fässle 1997 – 2016, Hogshead, 52,2%

Orchard fruits (yeah, loads of apples, pears apricots, bitter oranges, cristallized mangos with saffron, traces of banana and pineapples, a fruit fly’s paradise and whiffs of a juicy fruit gum), malt, licorice, ginger, almond milk with vanilla sugar, tonka beans, freshly cleaned mahogani cupboard, quite some wood smoke, ozone and coal gas freshness. Grassy, malty and slightly nutty (pistachio) on the palate at first, then the fruit and caramel/vanilla take center stage. With a really nice and long finsh. 89.

Fine Lowland Grain (Girvan) 52 y.o. Whisky-Fässle 1964 – 2016, Barrel, 47,7%

Dinosaur! Typical of such old grains, it changes between the categories of rum, bourbon and scotch all the time, rollercoaster. What a deep nose, like the finest rum aged for over 30 years in Caribbean climate. However, the vodka-esque graininess is still there as well as vanilla and caramel. Green tea, muscovado sweetness and ripe tropical fruits, coconut oil, spinach, undergrowth and bublegum. The oak and spicy elements never overwhelm, this is still somewhat spirit-driven after all these years. A must-have for maltsters and rumheads alike. 91.

Fine Blended Malt of various very old vintages for Whisky-Fässle, bottled 2016, Sherry Butt, 45,2%

The nose reveals canned milk, ginger bread, very Speysidey in its esters, vanilla, green tea, and mostly: plum cake with cinnamon and whipped cream on top (Zwetschgendatschi)! Then nettles. It becomes dusty with old-style class in moments, some sherry rounds it off discretly. The palate is so well organized, very classy again and totally my style. Some won’t get this eöegance, but if you are into old drams that are not overloaded with primary aromas, this is your choice – and mine. Balance king, no offnote, dangerously drinkable. LOVE it. Great price-performance ratio – Jens, you Swabian wizard of quality. 91.

Glenrothes 19 y.o. Whisky-Fässle 1997 – 2016, Sherry Butt, 51,8%

Wonderful resistance of the great Glenrothes distillery character (a favourite of blend masters) that stands up to heaviest sherry fire. Like a Glendronach in moments, but juicier. Dark fruits (but not only raisins like with treated cask aromas), ginger bread hearts with cherry jam filling, jaffa cake (orange meets chocolate on a sponge cake), geranium flowerpot earth with some petals, morello marvel. The palate is a good combination of bone dry vs. juicy sherry, the dry character wins in the end. A really nice sherry monster with some distillery character preserved. 90+.

Barbancourt 12 y.o. Whisky-Fässle 2004 – 2016, Bourbon Barrel, 51,9% (Rhum from Haiti)

Very much like the 15 y.o. original version (which is adorable and helps many good people in Haiti to survive), but with more depth and power. However, the bourbon wood is louder than I would have liked it (vanilla),  but some are exactly looking for that. Very soft, balanced and slightly earty – plus licorice. This Haitian Agricole is an interesting alternative to Martinique or Guadeloupe. Try it. 89.

Epris 17 y.o. Whisky-Fässle 1999 – 2016, Barrel, 45,6% (Rum from Brazil)

Never had this distillery before, mybe once with a Cadenhead Brazilian bottling – wow, very different: rotten limes, green tea and rose hip touch, mint, orange zest. It tastes almost like a spiced rum, really funky stuff on the freestyle edge, you have to like this, but it has personality. The finish has menthol, rotten oranges, and many weird but somehow interesting elements. It grows on you if you are open to new styles. 87.

Die letzten Feiern nahmen sich entweder ein Thema (Whisky, Craft Beer, Rum, Cognac/Brandy, Wein, begleitende Speisen, etc.) in seiner ganzen Tiefe vor oder mischten, damit für alle Teilnehmer etwas dabei war. Diese durchweg sehr schönen Abende waren stets kurzweilig, lustig und brachten unserer Sache wiedereinige neue Interessenten. Dabei arbeiten wir non-profit.

Vielleicht ist so ein Event mit Niveau und edutainment auch etwas für Ihren Anlass – sprechen Sie mit uns (auch die Dauer und die Location wären flexibel, evtl. auch im Whiskymuseum, einer privaten Bar oder der Kochschule). Es moderiert immer ein Experte, der mit Herzblut in seinem Feld unterwegs ist und besondere Tropfen kredenzt, die Sie begeistern werden.

Hier ein paar Impressionen:

Burnside 24 y.o. Whisky-Fässle 1989 – 2014, Hogshead, 51,1%

Comment: This one noses like a Riesling Auslese from the Mosel area. Overall, there is minerality and a fruity sourness with grapefruit, passion fruit, pineapple, peaches and citrus-like aromas (tangerine), all this in good maturity (dextrose starting to unfold). Traces of coconuts, almonds and balancing spice (chili, white pepper) complete the nose. It tastes like the nose, very round, then it adds floral compounds and malt. The finish is long on vanilla and lovely fruit, only the oak leaves a little woody bitterness I could do without – but that is the only ‚flaw‘, so to speak, and maybe a personal thing.

Score: 89+

Littlemill 23 y.o. Whisky-Fässle 1990 – 2014, Hogshead, 51,2%

Comment: Many bloggers embraced this already legendary Littlemill and scored high – I can follow, wow, what a dram, although it isn’t above many other killers from there, it is right on spot with them. Littlemill is amazing. I keep this shorter: grapefruit, lime, lemon, aprcot jam, gooseberry, wine gum, green tea, marzipan and almonds, cake glace and what not, accompanied by big vanilla, creme brulee, white chocolate and a hint of oak, all in great balance. A must-have for Littlemill fans.

Irish Malt 10 y.o. Whisky-Fässle 2003 – 2014, Hogshead, 49,5%

Comment: Not sure where this is from, Jens doesn’t know either, he said. Let’s nose: A fruity, sour and grassy aroma with big toffee and fudge, tinned pears, Thai curry soup wine gums and Haribo peaches (sorry), lemons, gooseberries, elderflower, grass, hay, white pepper, oak and vanilla at first. Then pistacio, almonds, honeysuckle, apple juice and more. It has moments when it reminds me of ‚orange wine‘ (Sauvignon Blanc). It tastes just like that, nice.

Ben Nevis 18 y.o. Whisky-Fässle 1996 – 2014, Hogshead, 50,8%

Comment: I love Ben Nevis with its funky and unusual profile – and this one is really one of the best ones that were released in the recent past. It takes you along on a walk in the forest (pine needles, resin, earth, ferns, etc.) and adds various citrus fruits and grapefruit, curry, milk chocolate and a splendid acidity that balances everything to perfection. A fat Ben Nevis, gentle though. My recommendation!

Score: 90+ (on a personal level, maybe 91)

Tomatin 17 y.o. Whisky-Fässle 1997 – 2014, Hogshead, 48,3%

Comment: Somehow an old style Tomatin a la 5/10 y.o. from the 1970ies (I prefer the 5) with licorice, garden fruit pits, apples, white peach, pineapple, summer earth, leather and pepper plus the wonderful Tomatin maltiness. It continues to be a classic und old fashioned whisky in good balance.

Score: 89-

Diamond Demerara Rum 10 y.o.  2003 – 2014, Barrel, 51,1%

Comment: Rum is on the rise and now in style more than years before, deservedly so. This Guyana specimen (I think it is Jens‘ second rum) has all the typical features of this still but lacks the power on the palate to be great. It is good though, a good starter for getting into heavier rums.

Ein buntes Panel trat an

(aber nicht immer) mit einer vogelwilden Marketing-Geschichte vertrieben wird… und eine Spirituose, an der viele Brenner nicht mehr vorbeikommen. So vielfältig wie die Stories der Vermarkter sind auch die Gins. Von tief, gelungen und geheimnisvoll komplex bis hin zu flach und seltsam reicht die Tragweite, trocken bis süß, so wie die Aufmachungen der Flaschen. Genossen als purer ’sipping Gin‘ oder als Tonic-Partner, im Cocktail, etc. (wo sie völlig unterschiedlich abschneiden), das Feld ist weit. London Dry, Bavarian Dry, compound, distilled, aged, mit zahllosen Botanicals (auch hier ist sehr viel Spielraum, die Ansetzung, biologischer Anbau, die Anzahl, …), der Fantasie sind keine Grenzen gesetzt, doch gerade das macht Gin interessant, aber auch schwer vergleichbar in seiner weiten Kategorie. Wie beim Würzen in der Küche ist Vieles Geschmacksache, solange das Grundprodukt stimmt – das aus diversen Getreiden oder Kartoffeln bestehen kann. Also wie vergleichen? Wir entschieden uns für einheimische distilled Gins ohne Fassreife.

Ein paar Gins der Verkostung

Wir – das war ein Panel aus drei Brennern (Stefan Penninger, Gregor Schraml und Johannes Anleitner), zwei Bloggern/Verkostern (Initiator Philip Reim und meine Wenigkeit), Barleuten, Händlern und Endverbrauchern. Da wir alle aus verschiedenen Blickwinkeln auf das Produkt schauen, war die Diskussion im Vorfeld höchst anregend und auf hohem Niveau. Das Feld wurde hinreichend geklärt und für Wohlgefühl sorgte unser Gastgeber Goose in der Wunderbar (Regensburg).

Die Gins wurden pur und in Ruhe verkostet und gelegentlich auch als Tonic oder Cocktail ausprobiert. Unglaublich waren die Unterscheide in dieser schon von uns auf einheimische distilled Gins eingegrenzte Kategorie. Auch die Geschichten um die Marken reichten von sympathisch nüchtern über historisch interessant (Schramls ‚Kaiser Hill 16‘ und Penningers ‚Granit Gin‘ und die Info vom ständigen Diebstahl des beigefügten Granit-Kühlsteins in Märkten) bis hin zu völligem Marketing-Bullshit (I Dream of Gini), der nur nach einer oder zwei Flaschen Genuss des eigenen Produktes entstanden sein konnte.

„Botanicals“ für Gin

Im Geschmack taten sich ebenfalls große Unterschiede auf- So schmeckte ein Gin so künstlich nach destilliertem Maoam und Gummibaum, ein anderer gab sogar Räucherfisch-Aromen von sich, wieder ein anderer zeigte klare Obstlernoten – doch das waren eher negative Ausreißer. Der Großteil bestand aus anständigen und gelungenen, ja auch originellen Produkten, die ihren berechtigten Platz im Markt haben. Mehr dazu, v.a. zu Schraml und Penninger folgt in einem eigenen Artikel. Denn diese beiden Brenner aus Ostbayern, bei denen die Ginproduktion bzw. zumindest die Benutzung von Botanicals seit ewigen Zeiten Tradition hat und nicht nur ein Aufspringen auf den Ginzug darstellt, fielen uns neben dem Horsetown Gin positiv auf – vielleicht auch, weil die Produzenten vor ort waren. Doch diese Regionalität, und Abgeklärtheit spiegelte sich in den Produkten, und während der Verkostung hielt uns nichts von neutraler Betrachtung ab. Interessanterweise waren wir uns größtenteils einig.

Meine persönliche Reihenfolge möchte ich Euch nicht vorenthalten (bei ein paar Gins nenne ich Auszüge meiner Tasting Notes, die ich alle irgendwann in Gänze poste):

1. Horsetown Gin (Achtung: Batches variieren wegen Wechsel in Inhaltsstoffen und Produktionsarten) – toller Gin mit einem Hauch Beeren (Preiselbeeren), wenig Wacholder, dafür Zwetschgen, Marille, Orangenschale, Kamille, Fruchtbonbon, Majoran, fett und und ungefiltet, breit in Basis, weniger Kopfnoten, eigen. 84 Punkte.

und

1. Windspiel Gin – trotz einer etwas eigenwilligen Marketinggeschichte ist dies ein richtig toller Gin, ein kräftiger Macho mit 47%, was nicht jeder mochte. Schöne Nase mit Wacholder, schwarzem Pfeffer, Zitrone, Tajine-Gerichte (Gewürzvielfalt) etc., der alkoholisch-säurelastige Antritt liefert kräftig ab, und auch Schokoladennoten sind nun dabei. 84 Punkte.

3. Granit Gin (Penninger) – mild und doch aromatisch, klassisch angelegt, ein Hauch Gurke, Wurzeln, florale Töne, Zitronenabrieb, bunter Pfeffer, Gerbleder und Muskatnuss. Rundum angenehm. 83 Punkte, ebenso feel! Gin und The Duke Gin.

6. Kaiser Hill 16 (Schraml – sehr klassisch und einfach gut) und Ferdinand’s Gin (Saar, traubig-weiblich, angenehm anders) – 81 Punkte.

8. Monkey 47 Gin – 80 Punkte.

9. Bavarka Gin (mild, eigen, hopfig-harzig, Fichtenspitzen, Steckerlfisch, Zitrone, bayerisches Volksfest) und Simon Gin (untypisch, eher Obstler, aber doch gut)

10. Gin Sul (es fehlt zwar an Tiefe, doch er hat was: mild, weiblich, Orange und Bergamote, Sandelholz, Rosmarin, Vanille, etwas Zucker; er erinnert in Momenten an das Parfum ‚Fahrenheit‘ von Dior – noch solide)

11. Lyonel Gin, Secret Treasures (letzterer außer Konkurrenz, beide akzeptabel)

Spirit Hunter: Simon Thompson

White wines from Ugni blanc and Colombar varietals from the Bordeaux region are first double distilled (“à repasse”) in traditional copper pot-stills and then set down to mature in oak casks, only to be woken from a deep slumber – like a sleeping beauty – by a subject of Her Royal Majesty, who has fallen in love with this absolutely unique elixir from Bordeaux. Inspired by the region’s wine making craftsmanship and rich history, resolutely contemporary, the Thompson’s® range offers uniquely selected “eaux-de-vie”, exclusively from the Bordeaux region. The shared history between Bordeaux, Aquitaine and England is long and rich. The discovery of this forgotten treasure will add a new page to that special relationship.

As I love a good brandy, I am curious to try these rare distillates. Only a few hundred bottles of the 25 and 30 year old versions exist. Find out more about them here. Simon Thompson wants to become an established producer in Bordeaux. But can his distillates become rivals for cognacs. Unique, they are! To answer that, let’s try all three currently available versions:

Thompson’s Single Distillery Finest French Grape Brandy, 40%

Comment: On paper, this is not the real deal yet (hence the name) because it is only married with a little Fine Bordeaux A.O.R. However, I am positively surpised. The mixing seems to enhance complexity and the Limousin oak did a good job. The lead notes are hay, straw, dried flowers (geranium)

Union Jack Version

and licorice, which don’t immediately become associated with brandy. In fact, it is a bit whisky-like at first nosing, somehow between the worlds. I am also getting vanilla, soft peppery spice, raisins, green grapes, crystallized oranges, lemons and pineapples. On the palate it clearly presents itself as a grape distillate in a very gentle, light and slightly creamy style. The vanilla and the brighter fruits get bolder and are well in tune with the licorice and hay. This youngest version also finishes like it tastes, a real smooth and light sipper of good quality.

Thompson’s Fine Bordeaux 25 y.o. A.O.R. Single Distillery, Very Limited Edition, 40%

Comment: This brandy actually is 26 years old and way heavier and deeper in style than its predecessor, also more typical. Wonderful aromas of tobacco and soft smoke from fine cigars in cedar wood caress the nose as well as some rancio, marzipan and vanilla. Intriguing Indian restaurant smells join in (sandalwood sticks, Tandoori, Ghee butter, curry), very interesting. There also are raisins, prunes, dates, cherries in chocolate, ginger bread, dough, lemon grass, crystallized citrus fruits, pineapple and a whiff espresso to be found in this complex combo. This complexity translates into the palate and the long finish in a full and slightly creamy style that bears gentle smoothness. The raisins take center stage without going overboard. This is better than many cognacs of the same price category. Recommendation!

Thompson’s Fine Bordeaux 30 y.o. A.O.R. Single Distillery, Very Limited Edition, 40%

Comment: Here comes the ‚headliner‘, actually being 33 years of age. And how those seven more years in Limousin oak make a difference! There is so much going on in this Fine Bordeaux, amazing. A wonderfully balanced nose without any edges and a depth that displays perfect maturity that reminds me of an old Demerara Rum or a heavily sherried Speyside whisky (Glenfarclas) in its thirties but with still enough trademark brandy features. It is sweeter and darker than the 25. This kind of complexity leaves me speechless: Muscovado sugar molasses, lit cigar, humidor, cedar wood, chocolate-covered coffee beans (mocca), vanilla pod, mahogani, sandal wood, marzipan, old balsamico vinegar, fresh dough, ginger bread, soft smoke, flowerpot earth, geranium, malt beer, walnut liqueur and many fruity elements (dried apricots, prunes with a Hoisin Sauce touch, dates, red grapes and raisins, crystallized oranges and lemon skin) and what not – I kid you not, it’s all there! This elixir from Bordeaux coats the tongue and mouth in fat and creamy fashion and finishes at medium length. Utter bliss. Imagine this dram in cask strength. It would easily rival great cognacs. A ‚must-have‘ at a price point below 100.- Euro.

Some rememberable whiskies among many were the Springbank Rundlets and Kilderkins (89), the very dark 21 from 1999 (94-95), Pe1 (92) and the new C&S-Dram Series (all of them very good, esp. the Bunnahabhain 10, the Glendullan, etc.).

Willett-Bourbons, some R(h)ums, Grappe, Cognacs and old Glenglassaugh Malts rounded off a wonderful beer event.

Starka V.S. 10 y. Old Polish Vodka ‚Polmos‘ 40%

Comment: In Poland it was a habit for some families to fill a small cask with vodka at the birth of a child and enjoy the matured distillate at the kid’s wedding or a special birthday at legal age. Good idea! Polmosages some of their Starka vodkas up to 50 years and allows us a totally new perspective on this drink. Their 10 y.o. is the entry-level into the world of aged vodka, so to speak. It starts with a very surprising nose that is very balanced and not vodka-like at all – at least what I connect with this spirit. I bet you that 97% of blind tasters would take this for a whisky. I also like the spice element (pepper) and the soft vanilla touch, which does not go overboard like in the ‚woodka‘ (another interesting oak-aged vodka from Germany). Lemon zest, whiffs of ginger, apples, dates, raisins and an aromatic freshness complete this enjoyable nose, which has improved with a little bottle age. In the taste it shows its true colors of vodka with raisins, ginger, fudge, hints of fruit and vanilla, not overly complex but good in its easy style with a medium-length finish. Nice Polish stuff, I must say. Thanks to Christine and Jörg for the sample.

1767 Vanilla Cane Likör aus 15 y.o. Karibik-Rum (28% / 35%)

Comment: There are two versions of this with different abv. It is made in Flensburg, Germany (a city looking back on a long tradition of rum import), where 15 y.o. quality Caribbean rum is flavoured with natural Bourbon vanilla and diluted with glacier water, no additives, really natural and hand-made in all aspects. The makers and some connoisseurs claim that it is not meant for mixing – let’s see: Wow, indeed not artificial and full of harmony in the nose, more like a good rum that has big vanilla notes, like real vanilla pod to be precise. I am also getting tea with caramel sugar, traces of Amaretto almond liqueur, canned peaches and cheese cake with raisins, which means that it departs from rumminess with some time in the glass. I can picture it already accompanying creme brulee, Bavarian creme and stuff like that, even vanilla ice cream, Stracciatella or Malaga (rum-raisins). In terms of taste it is much sweeter than the nose would suggest, a bit too sweet for me, but maybe perfect with a cigar or in a tea – and it is a liqueur, so let’s not criticize sweetness (there is a law in Germany that forces you to add a certain big amount of sugar to call your product a liqueur). The intense and long finish adds whiffs of tobacco, coffee and marzipan to the aromas mentioned. Natural indeed, and drinkable on its own. Well done, Flensburg and thanks to Krissi (involuntarily providing me with a sample )!

New Grove ‚Lime Delight‘ Rum 40%

Comment: Mauritius born rum infused with hints of lime and spices, the base being the New Grove Plantation Rum. The nose reveals big lime aromas (slightly artificial and a bit like Sprite indeed, limoncello or toilet flush stone) and some white rum, that is pretty much it, but that’s what the label says. Chewing gum in the second row with traces of mint in a Mojito. The taste seems somewhat watered down with lime and mint in a rather neutral white rum. Nothing really happens here. Not fully convincing – but in a club, this is fine.

New Grove ‚Vanilla Touch‘ Rum 40%

Comment: Aside from another flavoured rum called ‚Orange Bliss‘ by New Grove, this is a new third version with vanilla and citronella. Let’s nose this one: The dominating vanilla aromas are way more unnatural here (in comparison to the Vanilla Cane from above), like the vanilla puddings you can buy – okeyish, not bad, but also not very original. Citronella and whiffs of warming spices (aniseed and cinnamon) are the only other notes to be found, no magic of the rum happening. Oh my God, I tasted it, it is quite a mess with much more aniseed and alcohol that seems cheap, altogether really artificial. Only for mixing, but good barkeepers only use quality if they are good … so … mmmmh, I don’t know what to do with this one. Forgive me, Mauritius, I love your oak aged rum, but this stuff is pointless.

Vom 10. – 12. Februar geht es im Münchener MVG-Museum (Ständlerstr. 20) wieder ab. Ein Funevent mit allen Spirits (Whisk(e)y, R(h)um, Edelbrand, Cognac, Vodka, Tequila, Armagnac, Grappa, Likör, etc) und sonstigen Genüssen (Schokolade, Pralinen, Kaffee, etc.)  sowie Musik und Kultur, das man erlebt haben muss. Auch den ersten Starkbier-gefinishten Whisky gibt es dort exklusiv, den wir auf unserer Schottlandreise ins Fass gebracht haben (siehe Videos auf der Messepage und mein e-pistle hier im Blog).

4) Whisky-Tasting im Männerladen (Landshut)

Auf ein Neues – dies ist der zweite Anlauf, da unsere Planung beim ersten Mal zu kurzfristig war, weshalb sich zu wenige Anmeldungen ergaben. Als neuen Termin haben wir einen Samstag ins Auge gefasst, um das Gewölbe im  Männerladen einzuweihen. Das von mir moderierte Tasting findet am 21. Januar um 19.00 Uhr statt (Voranmeldung, Männerladen, Altstadt 18 – 20, Landshut). Ich habe ein Line-up zusammengestellt, bei dem für jeden Whiskyfreund etwas dabei sein wird (verschiedene Regionen, Alter, Fassreifungen, etc., fast nur Einzelfass-Whiskys).

Jonny’s Whisky Essence / Prestige Scotch Malt Whisky-Essence

Dieses Konzentrat ersetzt Euch jeden uralten Ardbeg oder Macallan – und das für weniger als zehn Euro (Essenz ca. 5.-  und 750 ml Sprit). Nix mit jahrelanger Reifung, Herstellung in komischen Brennblasenformen und dem ganzen Zeugs für Nerds. Es geht doch viel einfacher:

Man fülle die in einem Fläschchen enthaltenen 20 ml Essenz in eine normale leere Whiskyflasche. Dann zu drei Vierteln mit Wodka befüllen, verschließen und kräftig schütteln. Anschließend bis oben mit Wodka auffüllen und erneut shaken, bis sich alle Zutaten vollständig vermengt haben. Basta!

Jim Murray könnte hier nur 95-98 Punkte vergeben, da hat der Uigeadail oder der Old Pulteney 21 y.o. keine Chance. Glaubt meinem Urteil: klasse Stoff! Das verspricht schon die englische Zutatenliste: Glycerine, natural and identical to natural whisky aromas, oak extract, E150 caramel. Was braucht man mehr?

A Revolution in Whisky-Making

Wir haben es bei einem Slowdrink-Tasting ausprobiert …

…und das Ergebnis war einstimmig. Ihr hättet dabei sein sollen. Da schnalzten die Geschmacksknospen, sage ich Euch. Die Festival-Leitung denkt momentan schon darüber nach, diesen Edelstoff als Headliner anzupreisen und in vorderster Reihe des Messeshops zu positionieren. Es wird importiert, was das Zeug hält.

Für den nun gesamteuropäischen Markt braucht man allerdings noch einen geeigneten Namen. Die momentanen Arbeitstitel sind noch ‚The Evil Bitch – Blind Men’s Choice‘ oder ‚Lochan Uaine Boladh – The Crocodile’s Ass‘. Ich würde mich freuen, wenn Ihr ein paar bessere Vorschläge für den wahrscheinlich besten Whisky der Welt per Mail machen könntet. Der Gewinner darf  eine Gratisflasche sein Eigen nennen.

We started out with two sparkling wines from the Prosecco area (Conegliano/Valdobbiadene) and wider Venetia which come in very fancy outfits. These wines were:

Ettore Ceschin ‚Bepin de Eto – Rosato Millesimato‘ 2009 Vino Spumante Brut 11,5%

Comment: I couldn’t find the vintage on the bottle, only the information about the 2010 lot on the back label. Anyway, this Venetian sparkling Rosato is a strawberry and raspberry-driven little charmer with freshness and good moussage and no yeasty notes. Later you find peaches, melon, lychee and other fruits in the uncomplicated mix. A great aperitif with a lasting structure, not really complex stuff, but simply joyful and well-done.

As new guests kept pouring in, we opened a second wine from Ettore Ceschin:

Ettore Ceschin ‚Bepin de Eto – Prosecco Superiore Millesimato‘ 2009 Extra Dry 11,5% DOCG

Comment: Same vintage guessing like above, only the lot number says 2010. However, this is convincing Prosecco. Not as dry as the label suggests, this is wonderfully fresh and fruity. I like it as much as the Mionetto bottlings.

Then lunch (game in port) required a mature Bordeaux on the lighter side which made me go for Saint Emilion:

Chateau La Gaffeliere 1990 1er Grand Cru Classe St.-Emilion 12,5%

Comment: Very typical for its soil and just at its peak. Brighter berries lead the way of this autumn-like wine with leafy notes, game, forest floor, leather and pencil shavings. The backbone is still intact. It fitted the game really well and revealed secondary and tertiary aromas in amazing complexity.

We had killed these bottles and a liqueur from my mother-in-law, who produces the Wallner-Gewekin Liqueurs, when neighbours arrived to congratulate at coffee time. As we still were in a bubbly mood and had apple crumble, we opened a lifestyle / fun-oriented sparkler, a cider from South Tyrolia, while my daughter opened the first birthday presents of her life (and prefering to play with the wrapping paper instead of the actual present):

Pur Südtirol ‚S’POM‘ Apfelcidre Dry 6,5%

Comment: What can I say? This in not a mind-boggling elixir, but it is incredibly refreshing and slightly sour apple cider – good now, even better in summer. The apples stem from a Grand Cru mountain site of the Southern Dolomites at 900 meters a.s.l. and express also some flowery notes at a great balance. There are not many better ways of having apples!

For dinner, we had one big course and three wines ( I am on a diet, but no one cared – so I would have to play more sports this week). The plates were filled with cold beef breast in a vinaigrette and little onions, pickles, eggs etc. as toppings, one of mom’s recipes. This went well with a Pinot Noir or a Riesling:

Sybille Kuntz ‚Gold-Quadrat‘ 2007 Riesling Spätlese (Alte Reben) trocken 13,5% Mosel

Comment: This Goldquadrat Riesling comes from a rising winemaker team consisting of husband and wife – who wears the pants here considering the name . They are growing fast and get well known around the scene step by step. This wine sourced from old vines isn’t very concentrated but shows good minerality and some natural sweetness that simply fits. Honey, white peach, bright fruits and reminiscenses of Alsacian Riesling hit the mid-palate at good balance. Very quaffable.

The dish worked with the Mosel-Riesling, but it was elevated into a higher class by the Pinot Noir / Spätburgunder from a guest:

Schäffer & Zeter ‚Bischofskreuz‘ Spätburgunder 2009 Pfalz / Palatinate (no photo)

Comment: This modern German Spätburgunder had nice notes of strawberry, raspberry and grapes, it was really fresh with nice acidity and quite some terroir. The wine was good but the combination was great.

For the later evening with conversation and leisure I chose a heavy wine that can mature very well, a Sagrantino di Montefalco, the top wine from that region made from the Sagrantino grape. This Umbrian area also produces cheaper wines named Rosso di Montefalco (mostly Sangiovese, some Sagrantino and other varietals) which are excellent for a low price. Try one if you can. Anyway we had this one from the amazing 1997 vintage in Tuscany and Umbria:

Saiagricola ‚Colpetrone‘ Sagrantino di Montefalco 1997 DOCG 13,5%

Comment: Ruby-red, dry, with a lot of grip — still young with a strong tannic and acidic backbone. I should have waited even longer but it already drinks nice. I was getting leather, wet dog, herbs (thyme, rosemary and oregano), soft smoke of toasted oak, pencil shavings, dark fruits (blackberry, maraschino cherry), balsamico vinegar, dark chocolate and almonds. A real complex biggie! This Sagrantino will open up and soften out in five to ten years, I suppose – then it will be heavenly.

Score: 94 (2011)

We finished the wonderful day with a miniature of Carlos I. Brandy (ca. 2010), of which I adore older versions from the 1970ies. The new bottling is still nice but not as deep and complex. I would go for 86 points.

Tomorrow I am going to continue catching up with notes. Included will be some rums, whiskies, liqueurs and Alsacian wines.

Sometimes we need to remind ourselves to stay open-minded. When I used to hear the words ‚Whisky Liqueur‘ it reminded me of

products like Drambuie or Irish Mist – not exactly my favourites. I could enjoy Baileys Irish Cream occassionally but I would never have bought a full bottle.

As my mother-in-law produces new kinds of liqueur at home  (see the ’not up-to-date page: http://www.wallner-gewekin.de), I know that there are exciting products in this genre as well. She directed my attention to this product. We call our liqueur ‚2.0‘ and try a lot of new ways like using less sugar.  I lend my spirit expertise to find the suitable basic alcohol for each fruit, petal or herb. So I kept my eyes open for new liqueurs much more recently but never had an interesting one from Scotland. Let me tell you how this has changed now:

The Scottish Liqueur Centre

The Scottish Liqueur Centre produces not only their own stunning drinks and deal with casks and special whiskies, they also make liqueurs for distilleries, castles and rare occasions. I was in the happy position to pay them a visit along with some crazy Bavarians. Their managing director Kenny McKay, a legend in the whisky industry, showed us around and also joined us at sightseeing very generously. And as we toured the Highlands with him, he kept pouring us drams and liqueurs to try. There was not a bad one among them – and everybody agreed.

I have made a short list of my favourites. All are recommendable, but I liked ‚Bruadar‘ best, what a wonderfully balanced liqueur that embodies the Scottish Highlands. Anyway, they all suit different occasions and give some cocktails the extra edge. Even Highland cattle like the stuff (see photo). Don’t miss out and try them – you won’t regret it.

Care for a Dram?

1. Bruadar (perfectly balanced, complex and top class – most recommendable for trying a liqueur for the first time – the Highlands in a glass)

2. Sloe Gin (many liked this even more than the Bruadar, great for mixing as well)

Oliver & Oliver Rum / Ron ‚Opthimus – 2011‘ 25 Anos, Metodo Solera, finished in Tomatin Malt Whisky Casks, 1350 btl., Domenican Republic, 43%

Nose: The quite dark elixir displays great maturity, pipe tobacco, dried fruits, kola nut, orange and lemon zest, vanilla pod, lovely exotic spiciness (led by nutmeg, but also cinnamon, assorted Asian spices and white pepper), a certain demerara and marzipan sweetness, ‚Big Red‘ bubblegum, pine and espresso – only after some minutes the Whisky cask influnece begins to show by notes of heather honey and sweet barley malt.

Taste: Milder than the nose suggested and more on latte macchiato instead of the mentioned espresso – the notes from above are reflected in admirable complexity and smoothness.

Finish: Back to espresso again, vanilla, marzipan, fruit tobacco,  malt and enticing whiffs of nutmeg and coriander keep goin‘ and goin‘ and goin‘ … no Tomatin Whisky traces detectable (but on the other hand: not at all missed).

At a nice Whisky Dinner I hosted at the Wittelsbacher Hof in Kelheim yesterday (they have a great sky bar) I could revisit some old acquaintances on the go (no notes):

The Glenlivet ‚Nadurra‘ OB 16 y.o., Batch 1109I (bottled 11/09), 54,2%

Comment: An explosion of exotic fruit, vanilla, toffee, biscuits, flowers and grainy sweet malt. Modern in style, but convincing.

Score: 89

Aberlour  ‚a’bunadh‘, Oloroso Cask Maturation, Batch No. 35, 60,3%

Comment: Still a stunner, although the cask quality has gone down a bit. I think. This creamy a’bunadh expresses more raisins than usual. Of course, there are plenty of Sherry and chocolate, cherries, prunes, nuts, honey and great coffee notes. Altogether less dry and more accesible than in early days, but also less unique.

Score: 89+

The new Expressions

World Premiere

Cognac Pitaud has been described and reviewed in another article on ‚www.slowdrink.de‘ (check it out as well!). Their products have fully convinced me. Now they launch two new Cru Cognacs in a limited edition: Pitaud Cognac Borderies and Pitaud Cognac Petite Champagne. For connoisseurs, it will be very interesting to find out how the different terroir influences the final product. Others might say that blending is essential to have all you are looking for in one glass.

The Cognac Crus and their Taste

There are six Crus in Cognac in general: Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne, Borderies, Fine Bois, Bon Bois and Bois Ordinaires.

Cognacs from Petite Champagne, which is an area of 16.171 hectares, are said to be floral and delicate, but not very strong on the mid-palate. Finesse is what they are about. Sometimes they also show good sweetness. These distillates are often mixed with Grande Champagne Cognacs, the most prestigious and quite powerful Cru with similar aromas but a bigger body, and are then often marketed as ‚Fine Champagne‘.

The Borderies Cognacs (the smallest Cru of only 4.160 hectares) have the most character and distinction because of a great microclimate. Here maturity is reached faster than in the other areas. Borderies Cognacs also vary more than the Cognacs of other areas and tend to be really round and a bit sweeter. Nutty aromas, big texture, a long finish and hints of iris and violet make them very popular for high-end products.

Let’s see how the new Pitaud Cognacs reflect this general description:

Pitaud Cognac ‚Petite Champagne‘ Edition Limitee, 40%

This is a bit darker in color than the Borderies. The delicate Cognac shows flowers, herbs, grapes, dark oaky tones and a touch of smoke. Furthermore, vanilla, peaches, lime, lemon zest, almonds, dried fruits, Autan gnat spray, Cuban cigar, caramel, pine and white pepper add to the mix. In conclusion, it is more on the delicate side – which is in line with the Cru’s typicality.

Pitaud Cognac ‚Borderies‘ Edition Limitee, 40%

This is slightly lighter in color. In general it is earthier in style, also spicier (black pepper, Asian spices). However, both versions have flowers (violets, but less than at PC), herbs, grapes, dried fruits, smoke and dark oaky tones in common. The Borderies‘ exclusive aromas are hazelnuts, apricots, raisins, cookie-like notes, orange zest, hints of a humidor (less than in the Petite Champagne version), must and fleshy jerky. Altogether it is a bit richer and heavier, which again fits the expected typical taste of the Cru.

In a nutshell, both Crus, which have an average age of 15 years, have their advantages and are high quality. There is not a full point between them, I just slightly prefer the more heavy Borderies version.

Vat of both Crus (50/50)

For fun’s sake, I vatted both expressions. I got more depth and roundness, both Crus added to the mix instead of cancelling each other out. However, what the mix gained in complexity it lost in originality.

This was a great learning experience. I recommend to get both versions not only to savour but to get to the heart of the Cognac Crus and the blending possibilities.

The latest release

Should a drinks-blog deal with the downsides of C2H5OH, especially when it comes to the health of our kids? Hell, yeah!!! But I don’t want to sound like a hypocritical party pooper, I just feel a responsiblity to say a few words about a new kind of drink as a person who promotes alcohol as well – but for a different reason than the industry does.

A Flood of New Mix Drinks?

I got used to the pre-mixed ‚Lynchburg Lemonade‘ and the Whisky- and Rum-Cola cans that mostly get sold at fuel stations and clubs for teenagers. But now, another flood of spirit mix drinks seems to be rolling in – taste-tweaked whiskies with up to 40% alcohol – do we need these? And is the industry to blame, do they act responsible? They sure do if it concerns profits! Of course, the spirit companies need to make money to provide for jobs (and they did pretty well recently) and produce the drams we love – but should ethics be sacrificed for profit? Or is there nothing wrong with these new releases? Many questions arise at a non black-and white issue. Let’s take it from the top then:

Promotion Example

It is proven that such new easy-to-sip-liquors can foster alcoholism among youngsters because the spirit is masked by artificial sweet pleasant taste and its effect is played down or glorified. Vodka paved the way here. And the ads never say: Isn’t it „awesome and great fun“ to become addicted? The new drinks like tweaked whiskys and vodkas at a high abv (%) are aimed especially at teenagers when we look at their campaigns (even on facebook).

Jim Beam ‚Red Stag‘ (40%) and Winter Jack (15%) as the New Highlights in a Series of Ever-Stronger Alcopops

Winter Jack Apple Whiskey Punch: Can you hear the cash register's bell jingle yet?

There are wonderful small batch Bourbons by Jim Beam and Jack Daniel’s. But their new drinks which are heavily advertised „to have fun with friends“ might be quite pointless to a connoisseur (but I will give them a fair chance by a review soon), and they are promoted like a soft drink, but it actually is high spirit with artificial tastes underneath – one shouldn’t take these too lightly. Maker’s Mark also has a new product of the lifestyle-kind, a ready-mixed Mint Julep at 33%.

Where is the creativity in kids today to mix their own headache-maker, do they really need a premanufactured one? It is not their fault, it is zeitgeist. And marketing knows best: I am sure, there is a huge market for these lifestyle whisky drinks, Bacardi Breezers and so on…it is the same with beer-mixes, because the kids don’t drink enough brewski. Captain Morgan is advertised directly to put it in a mix with Cola, and then you have the real pirate spirit with your party crew. The club crowd doesn’t want the actual taste of beer or the spirits (mostly for a reason – minor quality in taste), these need to taste more like lemonade and should get you drunk without noticing and make you feel good about yourself. Some of these are ‚alcopops‘ and already dangerous below 10%, but at 15% up to 40% with an innocent cherry taste…isn’t this questionable, at least. Shouldn’t we protect our children from such lures? Can they deal with such drinks and are they aware of the consequences?

Promoting Spirit as ‚Cool Juice‘

Adjectives in the ads like „cool“, „cozy“, „juicy“ and „inspiring“ or the promise that the night ‚will be yours/on your side‘ appeal to the kids, and a jumping stag to a new beat does the trick as well, just like the X-mas-like winter landscape ideal for a dram at the fireplace on the new Jack Daniel’s bottle. A clear message is transmitted: Drink these mixes and things are cool….in fact, you are cool! Well, …?

Ok, given that some of us had a similar drinking style in our young days, but weren’t we mixing the stuff by ourselves, were creative and saved money (these alcopops are ridiculously priced)? And the alcohol still tasted terrible. We didn’t often drink Jack, Johnnie and Jim or the Captain at full strength. I remember once mixing orange juice, Blue Bols and a cheap Cognac with Coke (all these were remains of my parents in their basement, forgotten there) in a big bottle for a party at age 18 so that the girls would try – everybody hated the mix but we finished the bottle. The following day was to be cancelled for all of us due to mean headaches, and we learned not to mix such stuff again because it was way stronger than we thought.  And that was a valuable learning experience after all. Nevertheless, such mixes weren’t promoted anywhere. Ads were only made for the pure stuff then.

Not only Girls should reconsider

Time will tell …

It has to be monitored how the new mix drinks will affect the drinking habits of youths. Maybe this turns out  less dangerous than I expect. That’s what I hope for – also because I like and respect many people working for the companies mentioned – and this should stay that way. Aside from that I ask myself a crucial question: Does it take a certain maturity and age to deal with alcohol in general and especially with alcohol’s taste and not with its effect? I am not yet sure what the answer to this might be, but if it should be yes, our kids need more protection.

Maker's Mark's Contribution

Sometimes youngsters ask me about the whisky club and if we drink a lot. Once I start explaining that we look for taste, not the rush of the alcohol in our blood, they wonder. I puzzle their minds by describing that a moderate and taste-oriented approach to drinks can be enriching and full of cultural experience without feeling the booze at all. Such an approach would be much better to teach them a responsible handling of their alcohol intake because they are aware of what they drink. I’d rather take my daughter to a well-moderated tasting than send her to a party with freely available alcopops (the best would be, however, to send her to sports instead). I will close with the words of a barkeeper meaning that one should drink aware and moderate (know your limit by knowing what you drink): Play with alcohol, don’t let it play with you! That is where the real „cool party fun“ is.

In reviews soon to come, I will fairly judge nicer spirits by them (e.g. are Booker’s and Baker’s Bourbons among my favorites, I proudly am a Tennessee Squire, translated for Brown-Forman at my time at Vanderbilt University and I like the clove-aroma in Maker’s Mark Bourbons). I might even taste the Stag to be fair.

However, I would like to discuss such drinks openly. I would even print an answer / a comment from the industry here as this is an independent blog. Feel free to write us about this topic.

Hintergrund:

Für den ersten Regensburger Whisky-Walk wollten wir auch eine Grappa nach dem Snack im Programm haben und griffen zu bester Qualität: Die Distilleria  Berta aus Nizza Monferrato (zwischen Turin und Genua) setzt sich rigoros zum Ziel, Italiens ‚numero uno‘ in Sachen Grappa zu sein, was Experten immer wieder bestätigen. Die Riserva del Fondatore ist die älteste erhältliche Abfüllung. Dieser Jahrgang (1989) wurde zum 60. Firmenjubiläum aufgelegt. 20 Jahre Reifung in verschiedenen Hölzern mittlerer Röstung hinterlassen eine bernsteinfarben schimmernde Essenz. Die diskontinuierlich in kleinen Kupferkesseln gebrannten Trester setzen sich zusammen aus den Rebsorten Nebbiolo da Barbera, Barbaresco und Barolo der besten Winzer. So eine Grappa für ungefähr 130 Euro ist geschmacklich natrürlich hochkomplex und entspricht nur bedingt der gängigen Vorstellung dieser Spirituose, die stark aufgeholt hat:

Verkostungsnotiz:

In sich stimmig und gleichbleibend von der Nase bis zum Abgang. Die Leitaromen sind Aprikose (zunächst etwas zu dominant, dann aber nach ein paar Minuten weniger vordergründig) und Vanille sowie die klassische Grappa-Traubenbrandnote. Daz treten reifes Obst (auch Kirschen), Trockenfrüchte, v.a. Datteln und Rosinen, sanfte florale Noten, ein dezenter Hefeton, englischer Christmas-Cake, exotische Hölzer (Sanddelholz etc.), fruchtiger Pfeifentabak alter Männer, Karamell, aber auch Gewürze wie Zimt und Kurkuma. Diese Komplexität lässt sich im fast saftigen Geschmack ebenso erkennen wie im sehr langen angenehmen Abgang. Insgesamt eine großartige und trinkige Grappa, wenn man langgereifte Brände liebt.

Yesterday, we had our first Whisky Walk in Regensburg, Germany, with 36 participants and 10 stops for fine drams – and had an awesome time (article to come soon, invitation to be found here on page). At the Neue Filmbühne-Bar with its nice fountain outside, we had a great Whisky Cocktail. And as everybody asked me for the recipe, I am going to share it with you.

This drink was orginally created by David Deck, Bill Deck’s son from the famous Pusser’s BAR in Munich. Bill Deck brought the classic American Cocktail Bar back to Munich by opening Pusser’s in 1974. Moreover, he is a wonderful man with great humour and wisdom. His son, David Deck is from the next generation of barkeepers and gives his dad a hand. He called his mix ‚Scottish Summer‘, but as there is another cocktail of that name around, we shall call it ‚Slowdrink’s Scottish Summer‘ and add one ingredient.

We chose this treat, because it was among the best Whisky Cocktails/Longdrinks in a series of drinks made by Munich’s best bartenders and it is easy to make. There were many great drinks that night at the CAMPARI Academy, at Negroni’s Bar, at Schumanns (Happy Birthday, Charles) and at Pusser’s BAR, but this one fitted our needs best by being really refreshing and dangerously drinkable. So here comes the recipe:

Slowdrink’s Scottish Summer

4 cl Auchentoshan 10 y.o. Single Malt (or a light blend of good quality)

1 cl Mango Syrup

1 cl Ginger Syrup

1 cl Lemon Juice

1 Blackberry / Brambleberry (not necessarily)

1 slice of Ginger

Put all the liquids in a shaker and shake, then fill it in a tumbler and fill it up with ice. Add the berry and the ginger slice into the liquid (and decorate with a lemon on the edge of the glass).
